GSMA emphasizes the challenge of if spectrum: maintain the current availability level or reduce 5g economic expectation by 40%

C114 - in the afternoon of April 24 Beijing time (Jiang junmu), Luciana camargos, spectrum director of the Global Association for mobile communication systems (GSMA), believes that all countries must give priority to allowing the mobile industry to use 2GHz medium frequency spectrum in 2030, and points out that at present, no country is close to having the amount of spectrum available to release 5g of full economic potential.

Luciana told mobile world live that the GSMA report released during the MWC Barcelona 2022 highlighted the GDP growth brought by the government’s provision of this minimum requirement (number of spectrum) for the mobile industry.

GSMA asserts that acquiring spectrum will provide financial promotion for countries in a series of 5g driven fields, including manufacturing, health, education and other industries, as well as smart cities.

Luciana explained that access “has a very important contribution to all regions”.

“If you look at some developing countries, it’s really closely related.” She added, citing a range of applications, including mining and agriculture.

Although access to if spectrum is important for the mobile industry, Luciana said that no country is close to 2GHz availability, and acknowledged that regulators and governments face some difficult decisions when distributing if spectrum.

“Everyone wants it, and there are other services using it right now.” She added and stressed that satellite services, radar, fixed links and government services have occupied the intermediate frequency band of various countries.

“The government needs to pay attention to the needs, consider what the country needs, and then make a decision. This is a difficult decision, but it must be made.”

The expert pointed out that some countries have made progress in achieving this goal, such as Japan, the United States and parts of Europe.

GSMA estimates that maintaining the existing global available spectrum level of operators may reduce the overall economic expectation of 5g services by 40%.

GSMA is currently in contact with suppliers, industries and governments on this issue. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) regional conference will be held in Europe, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean to discuss this issue before the 2023 world radiocommunication Conference (wrc-23).
