I am pretty crazy about digital privacy…
And being private on the internet in the current age is very hard. It is not a skill that can be acquired easily. So it does make one stand out.
Anyone interested in blockchain is most likely also interested in privacy too.
This is not a comprehensive list, just a simple one.
I use Tails once in a while, but my usage will probably increase more next 5 years. I only really use Tails when I want to find really niche information on the deep web. But some use cases are increasing for me recently (obviously legal things, I’ve never done anything illegal whether anyone believes me or not).
In the near future, I would like to use Qubes OS. Also Graphene OS for mobile looks interesting too.
Currently, mainly just storing information in text files on Persistence storage, but I would like to organize my credentials with KeePassXC better.
Built in with Tails so as long as I update Tails periodically, no problem.
I usually tweak the settings a bit, the then check cover your tracks site by the EFF to see if the browser fingerprinting protection is ok, just to make sure.
On the Tor browser, I generally do try to use onion addresses wherever possible.
This site updates valid onion sites. Whether a service has an onion address is one good factor whether they actually care about privacy or not (Facebook may be the exception on their list…)
It does get updated periodically so good to check.
For searching, I use DuckDuckGo with the onion address.
This site is listed on dark.fail and I personally really like it for many reasons. If one really wants to stay private with a domain/server, good place to go.
Being able to pay with various cryptocurrencies is a plus. But currently, I wouldn’t host a super important website here, because never really know what will happen in near future for whatever reason. One “problem” may be that Njalla is “centralized.” Maybe some kind of integration with blockchain could make the service even better.
I would like to try their VPN in future too.
Recent post from Vitalik Buterin’s blog “The End of my Childhood” has a table comparing centralized apps to decentralized ones. I think it’s a good reference for new blockchain alternatives. I wouldn’t depend too much yet as don’t know what will happen to those services, but good to try out.
Generally blockchain dapps are more private and open source, so best would be to use blockchain-based systems.
I am definitely not perfect with digital privacy, I could do with a lot of improvements. But I think keeping the mindset is important. Just using the defaults is a lot more convenient, but it does give a lot of power to the centralized systems making huge profits and increasing inequality in our current world.
