OpenAI just gave its upcoming model the highest danger rating it has. OpenAI revealed Astra, its first AI model to reach a "Critical" cybersecurity risk rating. That label isn't marketing. It means the model can attack computers without a human holding its hand.
Here's what crossing that line takes. OpenAI said Astra can find previously unknown security flaws and develop ways to exploit them across many well-protected systems without a person guiding each step. In plain terms, it can hunt zero-day bugs and weaponize them by itself.
So OpenAI is locking it down. OpenAI is now restricting access to Astra's most advanced offensive capabilities to a small group of vetted testers focused on protecting critical infrastructure, rather than shipping them broadly through the API. If you run security for a company, this changes your threat model this week. The same tools that defend your network can now write the attacks. Plan for both.

Uber is shrinking to fund robots. Uber is cutting about 3,300 roles, or 10% of its staff globally, in a massive restructuring aimed at reducing management layers and reallocating spending into its ride-sharing, delivery and robotaxi businesses. This isn't a demand crisis. Uber grew last quarter.
The cash is going toward cars that drive themselves. Uber is laying off 3,300 employees, roughly 10% of its global workforce, as it doubles down on a robotaxi strategy backed by more than $10 billion in committed spending. Managers took the hardest hit. The cuts will mean a 20% reduction in the number of managers at Uber, with some taking on the role of individual contributors.
If you work in tech operations, watch this pattern. Growing companies are cutting people to fund automation, not to survive a downturn.

John Ternus started as Apple CEO and immediately set expectations high. In his first memo to Apple employees as CEO, John Ternus teased a "huge launch next week that's going to be phenomenal." The date is set. Apple has scheduled its "Surprise and shine" event for September 9.
The rumored lineup is big. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, its first-ever foldable iPhone, the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, and potentially AirPods 5. A revamped Siri also matters here. Apple is expected to roll out its new-and-improved Siri AI more broadly, marking an opportunity to position Siri as an equal to chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT or Anthropic's Claude.

Texas hit pause on new data center hookups. Texas recently became the first major data center hub to freeze new grid connections for the facilities and investigate their plans. The numbers stopped making sense. Requests have risen from roughly 48 gigawatts in 2023 to more than 474 gigawatts today, more than five times the record peak electricity demand ever recorded on the Texas grid.
Much of it may not be real. The industry calls this "ghost demand," where developers submit multiple speculative requests to secure queue positions at little cost without identifying firm customers or funding. Screening works fast. Exelon disclosed that after tightening its qualification criteria, its "high probability" data-center load estimate fell 40% to about 11 GW.
If you follow AI infrastructure or power stocks, the boom's headline numbers just got a reality check.

India wants AI to pay on your behalf. India is preparing a framework that would let AI agents make small digital payments without approval for every transaction, potentially making UPI one of the world's largest networks with agentic payments. The standard has a name. India is set to unveil the Unified Agent Protocol next week at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, enabling AI agents to autonomously make small UPI payments under preset rules.
The scale is enormous. UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth 29.82 trillion Indian rupees ($314.21 billion) in August, with Google Pay and Walmart's PhonePe accounting for around three-fourths of monthly volumes. The hard part is liability. NPCI still has to make clear how agents are registered, what spending limits apply, and who carries the loss when an authorized agent does something the customer did not intend.

An AI power company wants to go public, and it isn't shy about the risk. SB Energy said it's "substantially dependent" on the performance of OpenAI as both a tenant and equity investor. The financials are rough. For the first half of 2026, SB Energy incurred net losses of roughly $3.2 billion and generated about $139 million in revenue, mostly from its legacy energy business.
The big names are all in. Nvidia has committed to invest $1.5 billion in a private placement at the IPO price, while OpenAI has been issued warrants worth roughly $5.5 billion. But none of the core business runs yet. None of SB Energy's data centers are operational yet.
If you invest, this is the clearest test of whether AI infrastructure promises turn into real cash.
