While today’s AI systems can analyze emotional cues and respond in ways that seem caring or supportive, critics maintain that genuine empathy is deeply rooted in conscious experience and social context. At the same time, more nuanced voices suggest AI could serve as an empathy “assistant,” enhancing our capacity to connect meaningfully with one another rather than replacing authentic human compassion.
