It was a cloudy Monday morning. The sun stayed hidden behind thick gray clouds, and the house felt quieter than usual because school was already on its third day of holiday. Phoenix woke up and started helping around the house. He washed the family’s clothes, folded them one by one, and swept the floor with the old broom. Doing these small chores at home brought him a quiet sense of calm. It felt like a simple way to put his life in order before they went back to the village the next day.
While he was folding the laundry, his phone vibrated. It was a message from one of his students who had asked for help with a poster competition a few days earlier. The student told him they got second place. Phoenix smiled to himself. He felt genuinely happy knowing the boy’s effort had paid off. He shared the news in the group chat without saying much, just hoping it might give the other kids a little encouragement. Then he went back to his chores.
As midday approached, he took the children to the mosque for prayer. The kids rode their bikes ahead while he walked behind them. Inside the mosque, they prayed together with the other residents. For a few moments, he felt lighter, as if some of the weight he had been carrying was gently lifted.
After returning home, they ate lunch together. The food was simple, but eating as a family felt nice. Afterward, he decided to take a short nap.
In the afternoon, the children asked to be taken to the Garden of Paradise for their religious class. He took them on his black motorbike. On the way, they stopped at a small shop because the kids wanted to buy snacks. Watching them excitedly choose what they wanted made him realize how important these small moments were. After dropping them off, he rode home alone.
At night, after the evening prayer, he went back to pick them up. As soon as the children saw him at the gate, they ran toward him with bright faces. They told him they had come in second place in their activity that evening. Phoenix gave them a small nod and gently placed his hand on their heads for a moment. He felt quietly proud. After his student’s achievement earlier in the day, now it was his own children who came home with something to be proud of.
When they got home, he helped the children get ready for bed. After everything was settled, he sat outside for a while, looking at the dark sky. He hadn’t taught that day, but his responsibilities hadn’t gone anywhere. There was still the house payment to think about, and the small commitment he kept for the Education Impact Fund. These things were still there, quietly waiting.
As the night grew later, he turned off the lights one by one. In the quiet darkness, he felt a sense of calm. Somewhere inside him, a small light was still burning steadily. Not brightly, but enough to remind him that even on a slower day like this, he was still moving forward, still trying to guide the people he cared about, however small his steps might be.
