The smoke haze still hung low on that dry Monday morning, as if the sky itself refused to show its face. He had already put on his black mask, mounted his black motorcycle, and followed the road lined with coconut trees, banana plants, cassava, areca palms, and wild grass swaying gently. Every pulse of the engine felt like a small heartbeat of something larger, something that kept rising even as exhaustion settled deep into his bones. Behind the mask his breathing stayed steady, holding back the dust and the feelings he had no time to speak. The Garden of Paradise where he devoted himself was already waiting, and he arrived on time, as always, as though punctuality itself was a promise that must never be broken.

After a week of meeting only through screens, the classrooms came alive again that morning. He began in XI F7, the room under his care. The attendance list was opened, young faces greeted with a gaze both gentle and firm. A few of them were asked to clean the dirty terrace. The simple acts of sweeping and wiping held a quiet lesson about caring for a shared space, about small responsibilities that slowly shape character. He watched them work, and a silent pride rose in his chest, pride that he could still be present, still guide, still kindle a small flame amid the haze that covered everything.

Then he moved to XI F6. The assignments completed during online learning were opened one by one. He graded them carefully, knowing how much the students awaited those numbers as recognition of their effort. Before the marks were given, he assigned additional practice. The same happened in XII F7 and XII F6. Every sheet of paper, every answer examined, was a trace of dedication invisible to most people. Behind that desk his body felt heavy, his eyes burned, yet his hands kept moving. He knew that this daily consistency was slowly turning the ashes of fatigue into an ember that refused to die. That ember was not only for himself, but for the future being shaped in those rooms, a future that one day would help fill the Education Impact Fund, a small legacy from every hour he burned with sincerity.

Noon drew near and the call to prayer sounded softly. The Garden of Paradise felt quieter because the children had been sent home early, the smoke haze still thick. He walked toward the mosque with calm steps. Inside, he joined his fellow teachers. The congregational prayer unfolded simply and warmly, without stiffness. Bodies equally weary stood side by side, bowed together, finding a brief ease in the middle of a day still veiled. When it ended he stepped out and walked into the open field.

He stopped in the middle of the wide field. The sky above remained covered by thick smoke haze, the clouds hidden behind a grey curtain. He gazed for a long time, letting the wind touch his face, letting the question that had long settled rise to the surface of his heart. When would the light smile widely from behind the veil? When would the sky open itself and allow the sun to break through completely?

The question did not seek an immediate answer. He simply stood, allowing the feelings to flow: the burning weariness, the quiet anxiety of a father still carrying the remaining mortgage on the family home, the hope he continued to tend even when the days felt heavy. In that empty field he felt himself like a small flame that refused to go out, a flame that kept burning though the wind was strong and the haze kept trying to smother it. Every day lived with love, every assignment graded, every prayer offered, was the quietest and most sacred form of rising again.

Afterward he returned to his desk for a short rest. In the space between breaths that were beginning to ease, he opened his laptop and sent a visual work together with its story to Superpresent Magazine in Houston, Texas, United States, under the theme Not Knowing. He sent it without hard expectation, only with a simple prayer that the small light from his hands and heart might be received by a wider world. Not long after, a call came from his mother. He agreed to visit her house after work, as though that promise was part of a chain of affection that must not be broken.

Afternoon arrived. He left the Garden of Paradise and headed home. Once there, he invited his wife and children to his mother’s house. In that simple home his mother handed over a sack of rice, a small gesture that carried warmth. Then they returned, still beneath the veil that had not lifted since midday. The sky remained grey. He rode the motorcycle carrying his family, and in that journey a quiet sense of safety slowly spread.

Night followed. He took his children to the neighborhood mosque for the night prayer together with the neighbors. The atmosphere inside felt familiar, full of the quiet warmth of people seeking the same calm at the end of the day. When it was over he picked up his eldest child who had just finished religious study. At home, fried rice cooked by his wife was already waiting. They ate together, each mouthful warm, even though outside the veil still danced with the night wind. At that table he felt again the reason he kept rising every morning: the family that was his root, and the children who were the reason the flame inside him continued to be guarded.

After dinner he opened his laptop once more. His visual work was sent to ArtSloth in Goa, India. The same hands that had graded students’ work all day now sent a small light to a distant place. He hoped, quietly, that one day this dedication would be enough to clear the remaining mortgage on the house, enough to give his family a freer breath, and enough to keep filling the Education Impact Fund as a living trace of every day lived with consistency.

When he was about to sleep, the allergy that had long been waiting struck again. Coughs came one after another, his chest felt tight. He took the medicine at once and waited until the coughing slowly subsided. In the dark quiet of the room he felt once more the ashes of fatigue clinging to his body. Yet behind the coughing and the ache, the small flame still burned. It was not a spectacular fire, only a fire chosen again each day, a fire born from simple acts repeated with love.

That night, before his eyes finally closed, he knew the haze might still come tomorrow. The veil might still cover the sky. Yet he also knew the light had never truly disappeared. He was only waiting, and while waiting he continued to burn himself in quiet dedication, turning each day into a small monument of the soul’s endurance, of sacrifices rarely seen, and of hope that was kept alive even while the world outside remained wrapped in grey.
