In the morning still wrapped in the haze left by forest fires, the first light of dawn lingered softly behind the window of a simple house at the edge of a rubber-tree town. He stood for a moment at the kitchen doorway, watching the quiet that held the room. Inside him, something that had burned itself day after day in front of classrooms was now regenerating. Its wings folded in calm, a red-orange glow burning low in his chest. Body and spirit, worn from weeks of giving everything, were slowly recovering while still carrying the remaining weight of the family’s house mortgage. From ash to flame, from weariness to new strength, so that tomorrow he could rise higher again. Rest was never laziness. It was a sacred recharging, the careful tending of an ember so it would not die out, ready to burn once more for his students.

He prepared a cup of warm sweet tea with unhurried hands, the steam rising like a long-held breath finally released. Together with his wife and children, the simple breakfast of biscuits became a quiet harbor amid the haze still peeking from outside. The warmth sank into his bones, easing the last traces of yesterday’s fatigue. The smoke beyond the glass seemed almost envious of the peace forming inside the house, where gratitude for the long struggle grew quietly, like roots pressing deeper into dry ground.

When his wife left for the market to buy ingredients for twenty  packets of yellow rice with malbi chicken ordered by a friend, he stayed behind with the children at play. Their light laughter became a gentle rhythm that reminded him that beneath the role of teacher he was also a father who needed time to fold his wings for a while. Later he walked into the kitchen. The pot of frozen sour-and-spicy chicken his wife had prepared earlier was set on the gas stove. He lit a small flame with care, the same way he guarded the ember in his chest. The aroma of the cooking food rose slowly, sharp enough to make him sneeze, yet he kept stirring with patience. Each turn of the spoon became a kind of meditation. The meat that had been rigid began to soften. The sour-spicy broth thickened and released a warmth that filled the air. He felt how the time spent here was more than cooking. It was the quiet care of the small life under this roof, preparing a taste that would later gather the family. The deepening scent carried memories of long days in the classroom, where he had also stirred knowledge with the same patience so that students could take it in. The tiredness in his shoulders dissolved gradually with the rising steam, replaced by a soft peace. He continued stirring until the broth reached a perfect boil, every bubble on the surface like a quiet pulse of hope that refused to go out, reminding him that true strength is born from deliberate recovery.

Not long after, his wife returned and asked to be taken to a larger traditional market because the first one did not have the spices she needed. The place was near his mother’s house. He started the motorcycle, his wife and two children riding with him, masks still faithfully worn because the haze still danced gently along the roads. The long ride passed in calm. They stopped briefly at a petrol station before arriving at his mother’s home. There he and the children went inside and offered the food his wife had prepared earlier. His mother received it with quiet contentment while his wife left for the bigger market. He stayed with the children in the familiar house, letting their laughter fill the rooms, feeling how precious these ordinary moments remained even beneath the weight still carried.

When his wife returned they took their leave. He kissed his mother’s hand, followed by the children and his wife, a gesture full of respect and unspoken affection. The journey home was still covered by the haze that lingered along the road, yet the ember in his chest stayed carefully tended, never allowed to fade.

Back home the call to prayer sounded. He invited the children to the neighborhood mosque. Their steps were unhurried, matching the breeze that carried the thinning smoke. Inside the mosque the shared prayer with neighbors felt warm, like the quiet embrace of a community. The act of bowing became a space where the tiredness of body and spirit was gently set down, and the heart found a deep calm. The haze began to thin that afternoon, as if it too felt the spreading peace. Afterward the simple lunch shared with his wife and children tasted rich. The meal at the table became a quiet reminder that the unspoken pride of being both father and teacher grew from moments exactly like this.

Later he rested for a while on the red sofa, letting his body sink into the stillness. Then he moved to the small table where the laptop waited. He opened the screen and carefully prepared several of his works of light before sending them to the Springs – Animals & More-than-Human Worlds open call in Germany and the E75 Art Bus Project in Finland. Even on a day of rest the commitment to the Education Impact Fund remained, like an ember never fully allowed to die. Afterward a short afternoon sleep became a gift to the spirit that was quietly refilling itself.

Evening arrived and the children came to him. Their faces brightened when they received their small pocket money, a simple happiness that touched him deeply. Night settled in and the haze thinned further. Once more he walked with the children to the neighborhood mosque. The evening prayer felt more intimate, a silent conversation with the Giver in which gratitude for the day just lived flowed gently. Afterward he stayed with his daughter until she fell asleep, watching the steady rise and fall of her breath that proved conscious rest is an essential part of the journey.

In the quiet of night he closed his eyes. The ember in his chest continued to glow low, tended with care. In that silence he was crafting light beneath the veil, allowing the beauty of stillness, the strength found in recovery, and the hope that kept living to become the quiet provision that would let him rise higher tomorrow, carrying light once more to those waiting in the classroom.
