Every company has access to the same models. Every company has employees using AI. And yet most companies are getting almost nothing out of it. The problem isn't the technology. It never was. Here's what's actually going wrong.

There's a phrase making the rounds in enterprise AI circles: the capability overhang.
It's the gap between what AI can do and what organisations are actually getting out of it. That gap is getting wider, not narrower. Model capabilities are racing ahead. Organisational readiness is crawling behind.
Both companies arrived at the same conclusion: selling models isn't enough.
OpenAI raised over $4 billion to build a deployment company valued at $10 billion. Anthropic launched its own joint venture backed by Blackstone, Goldman Sachs, and Hellman and Friedman, totalling around $1.5 billion.
The model is not drop in a consultant and hope. It's embed applied AI engineers directly alongside company teams, build custom solutions, and stay for the long term.
Microsoft's Work Trend Index puts the problem into numbers.
Only 19% of organisations have both high individual AI capability and high organisational readiness. Half are still emergent. The most important finding: organisational factors account for more than twice the AI impact that individual behaviour does.
It's not about whether your employees are using AI. It's whether your organisation is built to capture the value of what they're doing with it.
Three adoption patterns look like progress but aren't.
Buy and hope: pay for the licences, send the excited email, wait. Contain and delegate: hand the transformation goal to the AI team and step back. Outsource knowledge: hire a consulting firm and hope they figure it out for you.
All three share the same flaw. Treating AI transformation as something that happens to the organisation rather than something built from within.
The White House Does a U-Turn π
The Trump administration is now considering formal government review for powerful AI models. Six months ago that would have been unthinkable.
The trigger was Anthropic's decision not to release Mythos publicly due to cybersecurity risks. Google, Microsoft, and XAI have already agreed to share early model access with the Commerce Department for national security testing.

The capability overhang is the defining enterprise AI story right now.
Every week brings new models and new benchmarks. Every week most organisations fall further behind in their ability to use any of it. The technology is not the bottleneck. It hasn't been for a while.
OpenAI and Anthropic have both decided to go and do the hard work themselves. That tells you everything about how difficult this problem actually is.
