Zcash Ecosystem Mapping

updated: August 2026

This research maps the active Zcash ecosystem across organizations, wallets, applications, infrastructure, explorers, developer tooling, protocol research, governance, education, and regional communities. Each entry has a checked link and a short description. A separate section remembers projects that helped shape Zcash but have since closed or been replaced.

It also covers the people and research behind Zcash, the cryptography it helped bring into real world use, and the papers that document that work. A listing needs a meaningful Zcash connection. Simply accepting ZEC, listing it on an exchange, or offering a generic swap route is not enough.

A short history of Zcash

Bitcoin showed that digital money could work without a bank, but it left everybody’s payment history on a public ledger. The Zerocoin paper proposed adding cash like anonymity to Bitcoin. The seven authors of the 2014 Zerocash paper went further and described private payments that could hide the sender, recipient, and amount while still proving that the transaction followed the rules.

Zooko Wilcox assembled the company and engineering team that turned this research into a working network. Zcash launched on 28 October 2016. Sapling later made shielded payments practical on phones; Blossom shortened block times; and NU5 introduced Orchard and Unified Addresses without requiring a new trusted setup ceremony for the Orchard pool. In 2026, the network moved from zcashd to a Rust based stack built around Zebra, Zaino, and Zallet, while Ironwood brought formal verification directly into the story of Zcash’s circulating supply.

The project has survived hard stretches: wallet sync problems, spam attacks, delistings, regulatory pressure, funding disputes, and products that disappeared when their grants ran out. It also became less dependent on one company. Today the work is spread across ZODL, the Zcash Foundation, Zcash Community Grants, independent research teams, wallet builders, infrastructure operators, and regional communities. That persistence is a large part of the Zcash story.

  • Matthew Green: Johns Hopkins cryptographer who initiated the Zerocoin project, helped develop Zerocash, and persuaded Zooko Wilcox to create a company capable of bringing the protocol to life. Author of blog A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering

  • Ian Miers: Zerocoin and Zerocash co-author whose research helped define decentralized anonymous payments and the privacy model inherited by Zcash.

  • Christina Garman: Co-author of both Zerocoin and Zerocash and a central researcher in the transition from a Bitcoin privacy extension to a standalone private payment protocol.

The launch also depended on a wider engineering team. Nathan Wilcox, Daira-Emma Hopwood, Sean Bowe, Jack Grigg, Ariel Gabizon, and many others translated the papers into specifications, circuits, node software, security procedures, and network upgrades.

Ironwood: a new chapter for Zcash

On 28 July 2026, Zcash activated Ironwood as part of NU6.3. Ironwood introduced a new shielded pool and a turnstile that lets anyone check that no more value leaves the previous Orchard pool than entered it. The important story is not the upgrade name. It is the amount of work that went into making the new pool easier to trust.

Project Tachyon’s formal verification contains more than 2,700 machine-checked theorems written in Lean. Three teams of researchers and cryptographers from Tachyon, Shielded Labs, Zodl worked on it for more than a month. Their proof covers the balance integrity of the pool and shows, under clearly named cryptographic assumptions, that Ironwood cannot contain an undetectable counterfeiting flaw of the kind the work was designed to rule out.

13. Sunset projects and honorable mentions

These entries are not included in the 128 active listings. Some ran out of funding. Others lost maintainers or were replaced by newer software. They remain here because people used them, learned from them, and in several cases built their successors from that work.

  • Electric Coin Company: ECC created and launched Zcash in 2016 and led much of its protocol, cryptography, SDK, and wallet development for almost a decade; its engineering and product team left in January 2026 and continued its work through ZODL.

  • Zashi: ECC’s shielded first flagship mobile wallet significantly improved everyday Zcash usability; it was not abandoned but renamed Zodl after the original team formed ZODL in 2026.

  • zcashd: The original C++ reference node and bundled wallet that powered Zcash from launch; it reached end of life after the ecosystem migrated consensus operation to Zebra and wallet functions to Zallet.

  • lightwalletd: The original compact-block service used by Zcash mobile wallets; its architecture is being superseded by Zaino as the ecosystem moves to the modern Rust based stack.

  • Zecwallet and Zecwallet Lite: Influential desktop and light wallet applications that made shielded Zcash more accessible, but were deprecated after they did not adopt the newer Orchard and Unified Address upgrades.

  • Nighthawk Wallet: Privacy focused iOS and Android wallet that contributed UX work and helped test Zcash mobile SDKs; long-term maintenance and user support became uncertain after its maintenance funding was rejected.

  • ZcashBlockExplorer.com: Widely used trackerfr ee explorer operated by Nighthawk Apps for roughly three years; it shut down on 31 May 2024 because continued operational support and funding were unavailable.

  • Nighthawk public lightwalletd infrastructure: Globally distributed wallet infrastructure that supported multiple Zcash applications before service ended in May 2024 when its funded operating period expired.

  • Zboard: Early Zcash funded community message board remembered as a polished experiment that lost activity after launch because it received little continued iteration or user-development work.

These projects should remain visible in the written history, but their logos should not appear on a graphic representing the currently active ecosystem unless the graphic has a clearly separated historical or “honorable mentions” area.

What Zcash contributed to cryptography

Contribution from Zcash to ZK was quite specific: Zcash researchers designed several new constructions and the network put difficult cryptography into production, where it had to protect real money for years.

The 2014 construction turned Zerocoin’s fixed denomination unlinking mechanism into direct private payments that hide sender, recipient, and value.

zk-SNARKs existed before Zcash, but Zcash made them the consensus enforced validity mechanism for private payments on a public blockchain.

A circuit friendly twisted Edwards curve and signature construction designed for efficient use inside Sapling’s BLS12-381 proof circuits.

RedDSA

Zcash’s cofactor-aware adaptation of Schnorr style signatures for curves such as Jubjub, designed to work safely with the protocol’s subgroup structure.

RedJubjub was deployed as part of Sapling in October 2018; RedPallas is used by Orchard.

Sapling shielded protocol

Reworked keys, addresses, note encryption, viewing capabilities, and proving circuits so shielded transactions could become practical on mobile devices.

Removed the need for a trusted setup by recursively accumulating proof verification without relying on a pairing friendly cycle.

Announced and prototyped by the Zcash team in 2019; evolved into Halo 2.

Pasta curve cycle: Pallas and Vesta

A cycle of prime order elliptic curves designed for efficient recursive proofs in Halo 2.

Implemented in Halo 2 from 2020 and deployed within Orchard in May 2022.

Sinsemilla

Circuit-efficient algebraic hash and commitment construction designed for short commitments in Orchard’s Halo 2 circuits.

Implemented in the Orchard libraries and deployed with NU5 in May 2022.

Orchard shielded protocol

New shielded-payment protocol built around Halo 2, the Pallas curve, Sinsemilla, and a unified action model, eliminating the pool specific trusted setup.

Activated with Network Upgrade 5 on 31 May 2022.

Unified Addresses

Extensible address container allowing wallets to present one address while carrying Orchard, Sapling, transparent, and future receiver types.

Activated with NU5 in May 2022.

Several ingredients came from elsewhere. Alex Biryukov and Dmitry Khovratovich designed Equihash, Jens Groth created Groth16, and FROST grew from a broader research collaboration. Zcash’s record is still substantial. It combined these ideas with original work, deployed them in a live monetary system, and kept revising the design when better cryptography became available.
