Running your own AI agent sounds appealing. Full control, no middleman, direct access to the latest models. But there's a hidden cost that most people miss: prompt caching.
Every time you start a conversation with an OpenClaw agent running Claude, the system loads your entire context. System prompts, tools, skills, memory files, everything the agent needs to function properly. For a configured agent, that can easily hit 60,000 tokens before you've even said "hi."
With Claude on a self-hosted OpenClaw, each new conversation triggers a cache write. The cache expires after 5 minutes of inactivity, so you're paying full price again if you run to the fridge for a snack. If you're running Claude Sonnet at $3 per million input tokens, those 60K token loads add up over time.
Starchild agents share system prompts, tools, and skills across all users. When you start a conversation, you refresh the cache for everyone else. When the next person arrives, the cache is already warm. Instead of paying to load 60K tokens of system context, they pay for 6K. The rest hits the cache.
This creates a network effect for cost savings. Right now, Starchild maintains over 90% cache hit rate. That means most user requests only cost 10% of what they would on a self-hosted setup. As more people join and contribute activity, that number approaches an even higher efficiency.
The cached content is system-level infrastructure, not private data. System prompts, tool definitions, and skill documentation. This is the scaffolding that makes the agent work, not your conversation history or personal information. Every user benefits from shared infrastructure without exposing anything sensitive.
Every skill you add, every conversation you have, every trading strategy you run contributes to the shared infrastructure. You're not just using the platform, but you're making it more efficient for everyone, including yourself.
Starchild also aims to be a network that rewards contribution. The most active users, the skill builders, the dashboard creators, and the strategy designers are playing a huge role in shaping the platform. To reward that behavior, we are filling the roadmap with ideas for revenue sharing, campaigns, and other recognition programs.
