A fox once wandered the valley searching for a home.
She came upon a dove who kept a house for the weary.
“Stay, and be grateful,” said the dove. “But you must earn your keep. No one stays for free.”
So the fox worked, mending nests and sweeping feathers, until her paws bled.
One day a wolf passed by and whispered,
“You serve them well yet still they call you beggar. Come with me, and you will be treated with fairness.”
The fox believed him and followed him home. There she rested and ate, growing fat from tender morsels.
Winter came. The fox was never heard from again.
