Introduction
With Defi and Cryptocurrencies, various industries are looking for ways to use decentralized technology to innovate and enhance their user experience. The gaming industry is one of the most recent industries to adopt blockchain technology and its various use cases. By combining true/direct ownership through NFTs, decentralization with governance systems, and Defi components, blockchain has revolutionized the way players use in-game assets, get involved in the game decisions, and receive in-game rewards.
The current state of GameFi
The prospect to make money while having fun has made blockchain-based games surge in popularity, especially in developing/low-income countries. The number of daily active users on well-known crypto games has gone from a few thousand to over a million in just a year. This “Play-To-Earn” model has become a driving force for the promotion and development of GameFi. The social impact of these games cannot be ignored, especially in emerging economies. However, instead of enjoying the gameplay and playing for fun, players tend to exploit games like gold mines and only focus on rewards, like a disguised yield farm. With the current model, users eventually turn into active traders, investors, and yield farmers.
Gameplay over rewards
We believe that rewards won’t change the great paradigm of gaming. Games are meant to be entertaining and challenging, that’s the experience that traditional players are seeking and missing from the current state of blockchain games and guilds. The avid gamers believe that the worth of a game should be determined by how much enjoyment it provides rather than how much money it generates. Games should be built around NFTs and not NFTs built around games.
