1:1 And it came to pass, on the eighteenth day of the twelfth moon in the year two thousand and thirteen, that a man known only by his moniker did raise his voice in the great forum of Bitcointalk. And lo, his words were not of calculation nor precision, but of revelry and reckless truth.
1:2 For he was filled with the spirit of whisky, and in his hand was the sacred chalice of self-awareness. And he beheld the market, which was in great tumult, and he spake thusly:
1:3 "GF's out at a lesbian bar, BTC crashing—WHY AM I HOLDING?"
1:4 And so was the eternal question spoken, and the faithful did listen. And he continued:
1:5 "I'LL TELL YOU WHY. It's because I'm a bad trader and I KNOW I'M A BAD TRADER."
1:6 And verily, the heavens did part, and the truth of all traders was revealed. For those who knew themselves did find peace, and those who thought themselves wise did find ruin.
1:7 And the weak hands did tremble, and the strong hands did steel themselves, and the traders did whisper in hushed tones, "This one speaks in tongues, and yet his wisdom is unshaken."
2:1 And the prophet did rebuke the false prophets of technical analysis, saying:
2:2 "Yeah, you good traders can spot the highs and the lows pit pat piffy wing wong wang just like that and make a million bucks sure no problem bro."
2:3 But he, knowing himself to be no such trader, did proclaim:
2:4 "I should have sold moments before every sell and bought moments before every buy, but you know what? NOT EVERYBODY IS AS COOL AS YOU."
2:5 And in that moment, a schism formed between those who believed in the doctrine of perfect timing and those who accepted the chaos of the market.
2:6 And the drunken prophet, seeing the folly of the weak hands, did declare:
2:7 "You only sell in a bear market if you are a good day trader or an illusioned noob. The people in between HOLD."
3:1 And thus, the word was made meme. And the people took up the sacred typo, and they did proclaim in all tongues and on all chains: HODL.
3:2 And in the years that followed, when the markets did rise and fall like the tides, the faithful did look upon the words of the prophet and find solace.
3:3 For though the world may scorn them, and the bears may roar, and the traders may mock, the HODLers shall remain steadfast.
3:4 And so it was written, and so it shall be.
HODL.
