AKASHA Hub Barcelona: Building Community Hubs for Local Impact and Web3 Values
@Nikoline; @Lawrence
Founded in 2017, AKASHA Hub Barcelona is a vibrant, community-run space that merges local impact with global Web3 values. Nikoline and Lorenzo shared how the hub evolved from a co-working space into a multi-functional makerspace with a fab lab, an urban garden, and over 300 hosted events — covering topics from biomaterials and digital rights to sustainability.
The hub aims to bridge abstract Web3 ideals with tangible local action by integrating tech, social projects, and the arts. Emphasizing resilience and self-sustainability, it remains primarily member-funded and closely aligned with AKASHA Foundation values. They’re working to empower more local communities by sharing tools and fostering cross-cultural collaboration — from open-source platforms to award-winning, soil-regenerating light sculptures.
4seas: Co-Living, Radical Social Experimentation, and Cypherpunk Ideals
4Seas defines itself as a startup society focused on co-living, radical experimentation, and cypherpunk values. Rooted in freedom and Web3, it creates community-driven, sustainable spaces with decentralized governance. In 2024, 12 pop-up villages were launched in Chiang Mai.
The project began with two spaces:
4seas Mountain View: a resort with flexible discussion areas
4seas Nimman: a downtown hub for crypto nomads
Link highlighted the challenge of balancing community-building with financial sustainability. Though the initiative recently scaled down, it now leans into smaller, focused social experiments. Upcoming is the six-month Cosmo Local Movement, merging global builders with bioregional communities — laying the groundwork for ZuChiangmai. Link emphasized preserving core values, financial health, and strong local ties while continuing to build and experiment.
Community Graphs: Mapping Social Interactions and Trust Across Communities
@Leo; @Jesse
Leo introduced Community Graphs, a tool mapping group memberships by centrality, blending web of trust, quadratic voting, and PageRank. It enhances community stewardship and reputation systems while helping prevent identity fraud and collusion by integrating offline and online memberships.
New features include a Discord bot (live) and a Telegram bot (in development), enabling communities to interact with Community Graphs directly from familiar platforms. The project supports decentralized governance and resource allocation, working in collaboration with groups like the ZuBuilder Guild.
