In 2024, CARBON Copy noted the brewing funding scarcity within Ethereum’s environmental, science and social landscape. By the end of 2025, some active initiatives had shut down due to lack of funding. Without a reliable source of funding for these initiatives, we should expect more to quietly disappear. And the communities these projects have been serving would unfortunately be left in the cold.

In search of solutions, the Greenpill Dev Guild has been experimenting with different DeFi yield strategies and mechanisms to learn effective approaches for creating sustainable growth. Their efforts have led to the development of the Public Goods Staking Protocol (PGSP). PGSP is being developed by a network of people who are regenerative, driven and enthusiastic about leveraging Ethereum staking and DeFi infrastructure for funding public goods

We also recognize that Ethereum itself is a public good as an immutable, censorship resistant, and credibly neutral settlement layer. Ethereum enables individual and community sovereignty and is the permissionless foundation for other public goods to thrive. Ultimately this requires a decentralized validator set and client diversity to which PGSP contributes. 

This article is a high-level guide to everything PGSP. We cover the architecture, how it funds public goods initiatives, how it benefits you as a participant, and finally how you can become a part of the protocol.

The Public Goods Staking Protocol

What is it?

PGSP is a community of squads running Ethereum validators to fund public goods. 

Protocol Participants

The protocol is made up of two major entities: squads and public goods. Public goods in the PGSP context are initiatives with an environmental, science and/or social focus interested in being funded by the protocol. Squads are small groups of people leveraging Decentralized Validator Technologies (DVTs) to trustlessly run Ethereum validators and funnel yield to Octant DeFi Vaults. 

Components of PGSP

The Public Goods Staking Protocol is built on the following technologies: Dappnode, Obol DVT, Lido Community Staking Module (Lido CSM), and Octant Vaults.

Nodes

To run a validator as a squad, the prospective members will each need specialised hardware nodes ranging from mini-NUCs to Dappnodes. For support setting up a node ETHStaker provides a comprehensive guide on the requirements and resources needed for a minimum viable validator setup. 

Obol DVT

Obol DVT’s middleware enables multiple nodes to operate a single validator collectively. As highlighted by Vitalik Buterin in recent disclussions on Native DVT, this architecture is critical for fault tolerance and client diversity. If one node in a squad goes offline or suffers a bug, the validator stays active, preventing slashing and downtime. This decentralizes the validator set at the infrastructure level, moving us away from the risks of concentrated staking.

Lido CSM

Typically, the 32 ETH requirement acts as a gatekeeper to Ethereum validation. PGSP leverages the Lido Community Staking Module (CSM) to bypass this. By providing a bond of  2.4 ETH, squads can access 32 ETH in delegated capital. This allows squads to activate validators at a fraction of the cost.

Octant Vaults

To ensure community treasuries remain productive, we utilize Octant Vaults. These smart contracts separate the principal from the yield. This system creates a sustainable funding stream where the yield, rather than the treasury itself, powers the mission. Validator rewards and treasuries can also be housed in Vaults to maximize yield generation while still maintaining liquidity for operations.

How does the protocol work?

You’re scrolling through X when you come across an article about PGSP. The idea makes sense, and you can see how you might contribute. You follow the link at the bottom of this page, register your interest, and share how you would like to take part. It’s a simple step that starts your journey with the protocol. 

Earlier that week, in different locations across your region/continent, Afo, Matt, and Giulio had also expressed interest in joining the protocol. Since PGSP requires a minimum squad size of four, the protocol lead guides all four of you through setting up and connecting your nodes using Obol DVT on Dappnode, forming a validator cluster together, performing a testnet deployment and deciding which public goods project(s) in the protocol’s curated registry will receive rewards.

Next, your squad secures the 32 ETH validator collateral through Lido CSM. PGSP helps squads secure 2.4 ETH bond required by Lido, after which Lido queues your validator address to receive the delegation.

Once your squad receives the delegated ETH, your validator activates. After 28 days, your squad earns its first reward, made up of validator rewards and the yield from the bond. 

Let’s say your squad chooses to donate its rewards to Greenpill Network. The protocol then routes those rewards into a Greenpill Octant Vault with planned Safe Zodiac Modules to enable a seamless funneling of yield. The capital deposited in the vault generates yield, which flows back to fund Greenpill Network, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of sustainable funding for regen public goods.

With staking hardware and in particular Dappnode you can participate in staking with other mechanisms such as Rocket Pool, Gnosis, Aztec and native Ethereum staking. With Obol you can run up to 5 squads on one piece of hardware enabling you to balance altruism with personal goals and needs.

Dappnode Education & Perks

With our focus on Dappnode, by participating in the protocol you get a hands on education and onboarding into validating with a staking 1st operating system. You’ll learn about other benefits running a Dappnode can provide like true technical sovereignty via personal RPC for private transactions, self-hosting AI, and managing your own media storage

Lido Identified Community Staker (ICS)

An ICS squad receives higher validator rewards, pays lesser bonds to the Lido CSM, and is prioritised in the 32 ETH delegation queue. For instance, an ICS squad will pay a first-time bond of 1.5 ETH instead of 2.4 ETH and get delegation from Lido before non-ICS squads.

Obol Techne Credentials

As an active PGSP squad participant, you’ll get help earning Obol’s techne credentials; non-transferrable NFTs from Obol that reflects your skillfulness and management capacity as a node operator. This credential opens you up for multiple node operation opportunities within the Ethereum ecosystem. For example with certain credentials node operators gain points towards Lido’s ICS making it easier to obtain the status to receive a lower bond.

GreenWill Badges

An emerging badging primitive being developed by the Greenpill Dev Guild is GreenWill which recognizes and rewards people for regenerative actions. As part of the PGSP squads will receive badges as they progress through the different stages of squad development from formation to launch. These badges will enable access to governance in Greenpill and funding pools via Cookie Jars, Gardens, and Streaming.

Conclusion

PGSP is a work in progress and this article marks the start of an exciting new chapter. While our current focus is proving that squads can reliably support public goods, the roadmap goes much further. We want to better understand the value of renting a cloud-based node via Launchnodes, collaborate with EcoVillages, and evaluate the potential of protocol-owned liquidity. Future iterations will also consider protocol subsidies and incentive designs aimed at lowering entry barriers and scaling participation, with upcoming changes to Lido CSM likely to shape how this strategy evolves.

Over the past week, we’ve journeyed through Pioneering a Regenerative Stack, exploring how each layer in our four-part stack works and how it can capture value. Now, in this closing article, we turn our focus to action: How do we validate that this regenerative stack actually delivers on its promise? In other words, how will we test, iterate, and scale these tools in the coming months to prove out a sustainable, impact-driven funding cycle?

Staying true to the Greenpill regenerative mission, we aim to demonstrate that impact can indeed finance itself. Below we recap each layer of the stack, then lay out a forward-looking roadmap for Q3 and Q4 2025 (covering pilot validations, community engagement, and capital growth). We’ll also highlight key success metrics for each project and share how you can get involved. Consider this our strategic game plan to turn vision into reality – with an open invitation for you to join our fellowship in this next chapter of regeneration.

Four Layers, One Regenerative Cycle

Our regenerative stack spans four interconnected layers of the Ethereum ecosystem — blockchain, protocol, social, and application. Each layer is a project that plays a unique role in creating a self-sustaining loop for funding public goods.

• Squad Staking (Blockchain Layer): A collaborative approach to Ethereum staking using Obol’s Distributed Validator Technology (DVT), plug-and-play hardware (Dappnode), and Lido’s Community Staking Module. By pooling 32 ETH among a group (“squad”), everyday community members can become validators with only ~2–8 ETH each. This dramatically lowers barriers to entry and aligns with Greenpill values of collective ownership and decentralization. In return for securing the network, squad stakers earn ETH yield – and crucially, direct a portion of those rewards to public goods funding.

• Allo Alliance (Protocol Layer): A community of builders and a suite of on-chain tools reimagining capital allocation for public goods. The Alliance is pioneering transparent, efficient mechanisms – from streaming fund contracts to quadratic voting, “cookie jar” micro-grants, and more – to distribute funds where they’re needed most. By combining open smart contracts with novel governance models, these tools ensure that pooled capital (like staking yields or treasury funds) is allocated democratically and accountably.

• GreenWill (Social Layer): A reputation and community engagement system that turns regenerative actions into verifiable credentials. GreenWill tracks participation in events, contributions to projects, on-chain donations, and other “everyday deeds” of community members. Active contributors earn GreenWill badges or points – a kind of “regen reputation score” – which can then gate governance rights or rewards (e.g. only those who show up and contribute can vote on funding decisions). This social layer injects meritocratic and values-aligned governance into the stack: it ensures funds are directed by those who have demonstrated commitment to the cause.

• Green Goods (Application Layer): A user-friendly impact-tracking web app (PWA) that empowers grassroots actors (like community gardeners and eco-volunteers) to document their environmental work. Using Green Goods, a local gardener can log tree plantings, clean-ups, or any regenerative activity in a few clicks on their phone. Each submission generates an on-chain proof of impact attestation, creating a transparent record of positive impact. Over time, these digital attestations can be aggregated and even tokenized into credible assets (e.g. hypercerts, biodiversity credits). Green Goods thus closes the loop: it converts real-world impact into data and tokens that can plug ou\ward into funding mechanisms (for example, being sold to impact investors or used to unlock grants) and inwards for reputation systems (GreenWill using Green Good impact tokens as an input for governance weight).

Together, these four layers form a holistic regenerative cycle. For example, Squad Staking generates a stream of funding; the Allo Alliance allocates that funding to the best projects/individuals; GreenWill ensures those making a difference have a say in those allocation decisions; and Green Goods captures impact that inform reputation and unlocks external value. It’s a virtuous circle – now we need to validate that it works as intended.

Public Good Squad Staking

As the foundational layer of our regenerative stack, squad staking is critical for sustained funding of Greenpill and public goods. Scaling this initiative effectively will create a steady stream of resources to fuel broader regeneration efforts.

A key focus area for squad staking is hardware accessibility. Within the regenerative community, there are many capable individuals who would excel as node operators but lack the necessary funds. To address this, we've been actively pursuing hardware discounts and donations. Over the next few months, we aim to acquire and deploy approximately 20-30 nodes (valued around $10,000-$20,000). Tracking both donated and purchased hardware will be essential for assessing our progress and growth in public-good staking.

Another vital aspect of successful staking is securing the ETH required to run validator nodes. We've prioritized building relationships with platforms like Lido’s Community Staking Module (CSM) to obtain delegated ETH. Lido recently increased the amount of ETH delegated to community stakers, enabling our initial squad currently queued to begin staking operations. This creates a clear pathway for future squads as well. Additionally, squad stakings growing reputation for reliability and consistent uptime — recently highlighted by Lido’s internal analysis — positions us favorably for further support from Lido and other providers moving forward.

Gitcoin Grants Round 24 & Beyond

Gitcoin, creators of the Allo Protocol, has long been a Schelling point for funding and experimentation in Ethereum's ecosystem. With Gitcoin Grants Round 24 (GG24) approaching, Gitcoin 3.0 is evolving towards Dedicated Domain Allocators (DDAs) — specialized groups focused on solving Ethereum’s most critical challenges. Builders in the Allo Alliance are actively crafting DDA proposals and building essential tools for the upcoming round.

The Allo Alliance can serve as a vital sensemaking hub, helping Gitcoin and Allo Capital navigate capital allocation effectively. Within the Alliance, impactful tools such as Karma Gap and Grant Ships have been selected to support GG24. We're particularly interested in evolving funding rounds into continuous cycles of support rather than one-off events. Streaming tools from Flow State and Flows.wtf could play a critical role here, enabling Gitcoin to offer more dynamic and ongoing funding programs.

Within the Dev Guild, tools like Green Goods can enhance impact reporting by automating data capture and generating verifiable impact reports. Recent discussions with Mahesh from Karma Gap highlighted the promising interoperability between Green Goods and Karma — allowing real-world regenerative actions to seamlessly translate into on-chain impact reports. By leveraging network effects and the unique strengths of diverse tools, we can build an attractive and versatile ecosystem benefiting both Web3 and traditional communities, amplifying regenerative impact across multiple forms of capital.

Lastly, GreenWill provides a robust methodology for tracking regenerative activity, potentially serving as a framework for allocating resources and weighting governance within and across funding rounds/programs. By clearly defining contribution-based metrics, GreenWill can ensure allocation decisions are made by those genuinely committed to regeneration.

Over the next two quarters, we're focused on diving deeper into the rich data generated by our regenerative community. We'll explore which inputs most effectively indicate genuine engagement, identify key patterns among contributors, and uncover emerging trends that can guide further development. This rigorous data analysis will help us better understand our community's needs, identify new potential users and clients, and refine the regenerative stack to deliver maximum benefit.

Of course, GreenWill is not alone on this path. Methodologies and platforms such as Superbenefit DAO, Gravity DAO, and Gardens each play vital complementary roles, steering the broader Greenpill Network in a cohesive direction. By aligning closely with these partners, GreenWill strengthens the overall regenerative ecosystem and ensures our collective efforts remain coordinated and impactful.

To measure GreenWill’s success in the upcoming quarters, we have set clear goals. We'll prioritize user adoption metrics on Guild.xyz, aiming for steady growth and greater community integration. Additionally, we'll continue to collect diverse on-chain inputs and addresses that document regenerative activities, ensuring GreenWill captures a holistic view of community impact.

Crucially, we’ll also emphasize qualitative community feedback. Success isn't solely about numbers — it's equally about how the community perceives and values GreenWill. Green Goods Alpha Pilot

Green Goods is a project deeply meaningful to me, drawing from extensive experience within the Dev Guild and our past initiatives. This makes it especially exciting to now reach the pivotal stage of piloting the app with diverse communities worldwide. From working closely with Wasabi of Kokonut Network to collaborating with Coi and Diogo of Greenpill Brasil, we've assembled a vibrant cohort of gardeners and regenerative practitioners, each bringing unique perspectives and use cases to the table.

Over the coming quarters, we'll partner directly with these gardeners, actively refining and tailoring Green Goods to ensure it meets their practical needs on the ground. This direct feedback loop is vital as we explore how Green Goods can unlock meaningful local funding opportunities and support grassroots regenerative work.

Become part of our global pilot and help shape the future of regenerative action tracking!

For this pilot phase, we plan to deploy Green Goods on the Celo blockchain, allowing us to build deeper connections within the Celo ecosystem. We've accomplished a great deal of impact with limited resources, but to truly realize our vision, we need to secure funding to scale and sustain our regenerative stack.

We've charted our path forward, aligning closely with Greenpill and the broader regenerative ecosystem. One compelling narrative we're leveraging is Ethereum localism — positioning Ethereum as the leading vehicle for local impact, sustainability, and meaningful onboarding of communities into Web3.

But our vision doesn't stop at Ethereum alone. There's enormous untapped potential across the wider blockchain landscape. For instance, Hedera recently partnered with Verra, a global leader in traditional carbon credit markets. By broadening our perspective beyond Ethereum, we open up new possibilities for collaboration, impact, and funding.

Our ultimate ambition, however, is connecting to traditional markets — municipalities, governments, and nonprofit organizations— through practical tools like Green Goods. By deploying these solutions, we'll deliver tangible, community-level impact, build relationships, and position ourselves to secure substantial funding. Achieving this milestone will mark a pivotal transition: concluding our current chapter and beginning a new, well-funded era focused on deeper community integration and growth.

How will we measure success?

• Funding: Raising between $100,000–$250,000 over the next two quarters would provide ample runway to sustain and expand our work, although we're confident in our ability to adapt with even more modest funding.

• Strategic Partnerships: Prioritizing fewer, high-quality partnerships over sheer quantity will ensure substantial, lasting value and alignment.

• Service Revenue: Earning between $50,000–$100,000 through workshops, graphic design, grant round design/operation and related services will further solidify our financial footing.

Ultimately, our continued focus on building authentic relationships, delivering value, and cultivating trust will naturally lead to funding, partnerships, and service agreements that keep the Dev Guild thriving.

As we near the conclusion of this series, we shift focus from building the regenerative stack to capital formation – in other words, how this stack can capture real financial value to fuel its mission. In our last article, we explored how Green Goods lets communities record and tokenize their impact (creating on-chain “ecocerts”). Now we’ll see how those impact tokens, and the stack as a whole, plug into larger funding streams. While the stack inherently generates some capital (for example, Squad Staking provides a steady stream of yield), scaling our impact means tapping into far bigger pools of capital. If squad staking is a pond, the broader funding landscape is an ocean. Thankfully, there’s plenty of capital out there – an estimated $4 trillion per year is needed for climate action and the SDGs, which is only about 1% of global financial assets. The challenge (and opportunity) is channeling that capital into regenerative projects.

By using our Green Goods to produce verifiable impact data and tokenized assets, the regenerative stack can “plug in” to external funding sources and turn public-good efforts into investable, finance-supported initiatives. We'll kick things off at home with Greenpill our community of Chapter and Guilds that actively coordinate and collaborate to form capital.

Starting At Home

We should begin with the capital close at hand – our own community. The Greenpill Network is fortunate to have a vibrant network of chapters and guilds who can utilize the Dev Guild’s services. As the Network funds various projects (e.g. via grants), it can rely on the Dev Guild to execute those where our tooling applies. This creates a virtuous loop: as the Greenpill Network grows and takes on more initiatives, the Dev Guild naturally benefits by gaining more work, and vice versa – the Guild’s success feeds back into the Network’s capacity.

One example is GreenWill (our reputation tracking tool). The Network can support GreenWill’s development in its initial Greenpill-focused phase, helping build a strong tool for governance. In the future, if GreenWill’s methodology or software can be offered to other communities, the Network could fund that expansion and earn a return as new clients adopt GreenWill. In short, by serving our home ecosystem first and proving value, we strengthen our base and create case studies to attract outside capital later.

The Greenpill Network is currently evolving; see the Regen Coordination hub for recent discussions on Network Structure and Goals.

Regen Coordination is a collaborative effort among the Greenpill Network, ReFi DAO, Celo PG, and numerous partner organizations, focused on effectively growing Ethereum adoption within local regenerative communities. Over the past year, Regen Coordination has allocated over $150,000 to regenerative projects through multiple Gitcoin community grant rounds. As an active council member, we are currently coordinating for Gitcoin Grant Round 24, bringing tools and methodologies that regenerative communities like Greenpill can use to capture impact and secure sustainable financing.

Finally, community-driven platforms like Gitcoin and Giveth remain foundational in Ethereum’s funding landscape. Gitcoin’s quadratic funding rounds have, to date, distributed over $50 million to early-stage public goods projects – providing that crucial seed capital for teams to validate their ideas. Giveth, similarly, continues to foster a culture of giving in Web3. These platforms are often the first stop for regen projects to gain funding and credibility before they pursue larger grants or investment.

Ethereum Ecosystem

The broader Ethereum community, even in a bear market, offers a plethora of opportunities for funding public goods. Take Optimism for example: its Retroactive Public Goods Funding (RetroPGF) program has pioneered rewarding past impact. The Optimism Collective has allocated 850 million OP tokens to retro funding and recent RetroPGF rounds have distributed tens of millions of dollars to builders across the “Superchain.” This shows a deep well of ecosystem capital for those who can demonstrate real impact. Similarly, Celo has a strong public-good focus – through initiatives like the Celo Public Goods and regional DAOs experiments, Celo is providing numerous grant opportunities for regenerative projects. The Ethereum Foundation (EF) remains a pillar as well, consistently funding open-source infrastructure and novel public-good experiments (many EF grantees have gone on to great success).

Emerging platforms are also stepping up to the challenge. For example, Octant is building a network-level public goods funding pool. With its upcoming Octant v2, the project aims to unify fragmented funding mechanisms across ecosystems by generating yield from idle treasuries and providing infrastructure for ecosystems to run community funding rounds using that yield. Recent discussions have explored how the Greenpill Dev Guild could deploy a vault where well-capitalized ecosystems can deposit their treasury funds, enabling us to run funding rounds powered by the yield. In essence, if a larger community aligns with your mission and tools, they can support both your work and their own by entrusting funds to our vault.

By leveraging such ecosystem opportunities – from RetroPGF on Optimism to Celo’s grants, EF support and Octant’s epochs – the Dev Guild can significantly amplify its capital inflows.

Growing Outward Into Blockchain Space

As discussed in our Green Goods article, Hedera is a well-capitalized network (backed by large enterprises) that has made environmental assets a core focus. It offers native tooling like the Hedera Guardian, an open-source platform for tokenizing and auditing carbon credits and similar assets. Green Goods is highly applicable here, and a future integration could see us tokenizing garden impact on Hedera. Hedera’s emphasis on trusted attestations could make it an ideal chain to formally recognize the validation of regenerative work. Notably, in May 2025 Verra – the world’s leading carbon credit standard body – announced a partnership to integrate with Hedera’s Guardian. This is a major signal that traditional players are embracing on-chain impact. With Verra in the fold, there’s an on-ramp for institutional climate funds to flow into Hedera’s carbon tokens.

Another chain leaning into public goods is VeChain, which last year launched the VeBetter DAO initiative focused on funding sustainability projects. VeBetter uses an innovative “X-to-Earn” model: it rewards everyday positive actions (like recycling, using transit, etc.) with crypto tokens, turning personal sustainability efforts into something like a game. Projects in the VeBetter ecosystem can receive streams of the reward token (called $B3TR) to support their growth, and the community votes on which apps get more support using a governance token ($VOT3). What makes VeBetter unique is its vibrant user base and heavy incentive design – participants actively compete in weekly challenges, and the VeChain Foundation boosts the system with grants and token buybacks to encourage engagement. For the Dev Guild, integrating Green Goods with VeChain would mean issuing an impact token that complies with VeChain’s standards and it could tap into a very engaged community that is literally paid to do good. It’s an intriguing option for our Green Goods beta, as VeChain could offer both funding (through its grant programs) and a ready pool of users.

The Solana ecosystem is early but eager in regenerative finance and public goods. The Solana Foundation and related funds support climate-tech and social impact through grants and hackathons. Solana’s low fees and high throughput suit micro-transactions to track eco-actions on-chain. A key player is ReFiHub, a dedicated regenerative finance hub building community and infrastructure on Solana. Integrating Green Goods with Solana-native tools — like SPL tokens for ecocerts or NFTs for impact badges — and tapping into ReFiHub’s network could unlock new funding and users. Though Solana lacks a large public-good DAO like Optimism or Celo, its venture ecosystem and growing developer base present valuable opportunities.

In short, as we grow outward, multi-chain integration is on the table: by tailoring Green Goods to chains like Hedera, VeChain, or Solana, we not only access their technical capabilities but also unlock new pools of funding and users dedicated to those networks.

Tapping Into Traditional Markets

Not all capital comes from crypto. A huge opportunity lies in bridging Web3 with traditional funding sources – from nonprofits to governments.

In the regenerative space, web3 natives sometimes see traditional NGOs as archaic or even as competition. That mindset needs to shift. Established nonprofits and NGOs have decades of knowledge, relationships, and credibility in coordinating impactful programs. By partnering with them instead of bypassing them, we can learn from their experience and also access funding streams that Web3 projects normally couldn’t. For example, many local and international grants are available to NGOs working on climate, conservation, social justice, etc. If we collaborate (e.g. an NGO handles on-the-ground execution while the Dev Guild provides blockchain tools and transparency), we create a very strong joint value proposition. In fact, during a recent Regen Coordination call, there was discussion of a $500k grant opportunity where a Web3 team and local organizations teamed up to apply together – a fantastic model of cross-pollination.

Another avenue is working with forward-thinking cities and regional governments. Around the world, there are a handful of locales pioneering Web3 adoption in public services – places like Barichara (Colombia), Koh Phangan (Thailand), Nairobi (Kenay) Colorado (US), Oakland (US), and more. These are often driven by local officials or civic tech groups who see blockchain as a tool for things like transparent budgeting, digital IDs, or community currencies. Through the Greenpill Network’s broad social web, we actually have connections to many such places (for instance, Greenpill chapters have members who are working on local climate projects, community gardens, etc.).By deploying pilot programs of our stack in a couple of these receptive communities, we can make inroads that position us for government funding down the line.

Our upcoming Green Goods Q3 pilot is a perfect example: we plan to work with 5–10 community gardens (some of which are in these pioneering locales) to test the app. This not only gives us user feedback, it also builds local government familiarity. Imagine by 2026 we can approach a city council with data from a pilot in their own backyard, and propose scaling it city-wide with public budget support. That’s a realistic path to government contracts or grants.

We should also keep tabs on other Web3-for-public initiatives happening in cities. For example, Graven the founder of Flow State and Greenpill NYC’s Steward Luciano are experimenting with streaming quadratic funding in a community context in Kesennuma – essentially letting residents allocate part of a public budget with a quadratic funding mechanism to fund local solutions. Learning from such experiments will help us craft our pitch to municipalities: we can highlight how Web3 improves on traditional models (more transparency, broader participation, etc.) while still satisfying the public sector’s requirements for accountability.

Why Web3? How blockchain can enhance traditional funding mechanisms:

• Expanded Reach & Participation - Beneficiaries extend beyond a single city or country, allowing anyone to contribute and participate in decisions like quadratic voting, broadening community voices.

• Lower Infrastructure Costs - Lower costs come from blockchain automation—smart contracts handle record-keeping, disbursements, and verification—reducing overhead and maximizing mission funds.

• Speed vs. Stability - Web3 offers speed without sacrificing stability, streaming funds in real time with transparent, auditable trails that build trust.

• Transparency & Trust - Transparency is heightened as all transactions and impact data are on-chain, ensuring funds release only upon verified conditions, minimizing misuse.

• Cost & Efficiency - Blockchain’s composability lets governments combine identity, funding, and impact tokens seamlessly, enabling efficient micro-payments and incentive programs that increase impact per dollar.

Onchain Tools & Mechanisms

Now let’s dive into some of the native Web3 tools that enable novel capital formation. We’ve mentioned a few already, but here we’ll outline how they work and how we intend to use them.

One exciting primitive in Regen Web3 are Hypercerts – a way to tokenize impact itself. In simple terms, a hypercert is like a digital certificate representing a claim on some positive outcome (e.g. a certificate for “100 tons of CO2 captured by X project”). Funders can buy hypercerts to retroactively reward impact or to speculate on future impact. With Green Goods, this is a natural fit: gardeners’ actions, assessments, and reports can be bundled into hypercerts. For example, a season’s worth of data from a community garden (plots tended, biodiversity improved, produce grown) could be packaged as a hypercert that a city government or an impact investor purchases to support the garden’s work.

The marketplace for hypercerts is still nascent but it’s growing. The key is establishing trust: having evaluators and standards so buyers know the impact is real. The Dev Guild has been closely following Hypercerts (we ran a workshop on it in late 2024). As the hypercert ecosystem matures, we’re optimistic that Green Goods can feed into it – our on-chain impact records can serve as reliable inputs for hypercert issuance, and selling hypercerts shares could become a revenue stream for gardeners and communities. In essence, hypercerts turn social and environmental outcomes into tradeable assets, unlocking capital from ESG investors or philanthropists looking for measurable returns.

Juicebox is a powerful on-chain fundraising protocol that lets projects launch customizable smart contracts to raise funds transparently. Contributors receive “receipt tokens” representing their share of the treasury, with built-in accountability. Legendary examples include ConstitutionDAO, which raised $47 million in under a week, and MoonDAO, which funded a community member’s suborbital space flight.

Building on Juicebox, Revnets (Revenue Networks) automate revenue-sharing with fixed, immutable rules coded on-chain. Contributors receive tokens representing a fixed share of future revenues — ideal for projects like community-run solar farms or platforms like Green Goods. For Green Goods, Revnets could enable steady funding by distributing revenue from impact token sales or services automatically, reducing overhead and governance risk. This “trust the code” model offers predictable, automated returns, making it an ideal fit for sustaining regenerative finance projects.

Tried & Tested Approaches

All these new Web3 mechanisms are exciting, but we’d be remiss not to consider the tried-and-tested revenue approaches that exist in any industry. Just because we’re building public goods doesn’t mean we can’t borrow from traditional business models where appropriate. Here are a few such approaches and how we might implement them (often with a Web3 twist).

Offering memberships or premium access to certain Dev Guild resources could generate steady support. For example, we could have a members-only portal with advanced tooling, exclusive workshops, or priority support. This would be akin to a SaaS subscription or Patreon model. In practice, since our ethos is public-good-oriented, we’d keep most content public and free – so a membership would focus on value-add perks (like one-on-one consultation hours, early feature access, or co-creation opportunities). Blockchain can enhance memberships by making them tokenized: we could issue NFT membership badges that unlock content or governance rights.

If a dApp like Green Goods becomes an integral daily/weekly tool for users, a modest subscription model could be introduced for advanced usage. For instance, gardeners might always be able to use the basic features for free (to ensure inclusivity), but power users like large community farms or NGOs might pay a monthly fee for premium features (exporting detailed reports, integrating with other systems, etc.). In Web3, subscriptions can be handled via smart contracts (e.g. a streaming payment that users can cancel anytime, like Superfluid streams). This reduces friction compared to web2’s credit card billing. A recent example in our space: Charmverse, a popular DAO workspace platform we use, introduced a subscription model in 2025. They actually tied it to their new token (DEV) – essentially requiring projects to spend DEV tokens for certain premium features.

Related to subscriptions, we can offer specific premium add-ons for a fee. In Green Goods, this could be things like an AI-powered plant identification feature, or advanced GIS mapping of garden plots, or perhaps integration with external sensors (IoT devices measuring soil health). These features might be costly for us to run (e.g. AI API calls, data storage) so it’s fair to charge for them. Rather than blanket charge all users, we let those who want the fancy extras pay a bit. One way to implement this in Web3 is via a token gating mechanism: e.g., holding a certain amount of a Green Goods token might unlock the AI feature. That way heavy users/supporters subsidize the costs, and the token could be earned or bought, introducing an ecosystem dynamic.

Last but not least, the good old services model. This has been the bread-and-butter of the Dev Guild’s revenue to date. We’re essentially a consultancy/agency for regenerative crypto. We’ve done everything from facilitating workshops, to offering pair programming and graphic design for partner projects, to running grant round operations. These services not only bring in funds, they also grow our credibility, spread our reputation and foster partnerships.

We intend to continue packaging our expertise as services, especially for new communities that want to get into regen Web3. For instance, a local environmental group might hire us to implement a basic DAO toolset (multisig, voting contracts, GreenWill methodology) for them. Or a blockchain protocol launching a public goods program could bring us on as advisors or operators. The beautiful thing about services is that they are immediately monetizable (no need to wait for product-market fit of an app) and can be done in parallel with product development. Of course, services don’t scale infinitely – they rely on human time. But we can increase their value (and price) by focusing on niche expertise that few others have.

In summary, we’re exploring all avenues of capital formation to sustain and grow our regenerative stack. From leveraging our home network and Ethereum’s rich public goods ecosystem, to expanding into other chains, partnering with legacy institutions, and using cutting-edge on-chain funding mechanisms, it’s clear that impact can attract capital if packaged the right way. The regenerative stack gives us that packaging: it turns local action into measurable, investable units (data, tokens, reputation) that speak the language of funders.

In this firth installment of Pioneering a Regenerative Stack, we turn our focus from digital infrastructure to dirt-under-the-nails impact. Over the series we've explored how regen communities can raise capital and coordinate – from the collaborative staking experiment of Squad Staking to the grant distribution via The Allo Alliance, and the reputation-building fun of GreenWill. Now, Green Goods ties it all together in the real world. It’s where our regenerative stack meets the soil – the moment when keystrokes inspire seedlings.

Green Goods is built on the belief that small local actions – a volunteer clearing invasive weeds, a neighbor planting a tree – can add up to global impact when we give them the recognition (and rewards) they deserve. In short, Green Goods is a simple app with an ambitious goal: make grassroots conservation visible, verifiable, and funded.

As a cornerstone initiative of the Dev Guild, Green Goods has been shaped from the beginning by a passionate, experienced team. Coi spearheads on-the-ground implementation and product strategy; Marcin drives business development and early-stage UX; Nansel crafts branding and graphic design; Marcus leads UI development; Alex handles app engineering; and I oversee the project, guiding software architecture and overall direction. Together, we're turning collective vision into tangible ecological impact.

Creating an Easily Accessible App

From day one, we designed Green Goods as a builder and user friendly dApp. The core idea is straightforward: empower those doing biodiversity work on the ground (community gardeners, reforestation volunteers, urban greening crews) to easily document their efforts and get recognized for it.

Built as a Progressive Web App (PWA), Green Goods runs smoothly on mobile browsers with a native-app experience, ideal for users busy planting saplings rather than troubleshooting tech. After all, nobody wants to juggle clunky software while holding a shovel!

We're optimizing for a few things:

• Frictionless Onboarding - We use social logins and account abstraction (via Privy + Pimlico under the hood) so that users can sign up with an email or Google account. They immediately get a crypto wallet/account without even knowing it. This gasless onboarding means no confusing wallet setup or seed phrases, gardeners can start using the app in seconds.

• Data, Not Drama - Along with photos, Gardeners log a few key metrics depending on the task. For example, kilograms of weeds removed, number of trees planted, or amount of biomass composted. We avoided making this too tedious – just enough data to be meaningful.

• Localization - To serve diverse global communities, we’ve implemented Spanish and Portuguese translations, with the easy ability to add additional languages through a straightforward JSON configuration.

• Offline & Sync (In Progress) - We know many garden sites are literally off the beaten path (and off the grid). While the current version is online only, we’re actively exploring offline mode caching so users can record work in remote areas and sync later.

These enhancements all guide gardeners intuitively toward our core workflow, encapsulated neatly in three simple steps: Media, Details, and Review (MDR).

Media, Details, Review (M.D.R.)

Continuing our commitment to simplicity and user-friendliness, Green Goods ensures that documenting gardening actions never interrupts the flow of important work. Inspired by the effortless experience of capturing and sharing moments on social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, we've created our own streamlined three-step flow: Media, Details, and Review (M.D.R.). Think of MDR as our friendly, simplified take on traditional Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (M.R.V.) processes a fun yet credible way to capture real-world ecological impacts.

• Media – Just like quickly snapping a moment for your Snapchat story or capturing a TikTok video, gardeners easily take clear, focused images of their completed tasks. These images highlight key features — like plant structures, branches, and leaves — providing visual proof that allows garden operators (and eventually, AI tools) to confidently verify and approve the recorded work.

• Details – Inspired by the ease of adding captions or hashtags on Instagram, gardeners then effortlessly input relevant quantitative data (e.g., plant species, quantity, and measurements) along with any qualitative notes such as feedback, observations, or challenges encountered during the process. We've intentionally kept data entry concise, making sure gardeners spend more time planting than reporting.

• Review – Similar to how you briefly preview your posts before sharing them with friends, gardeners quickly review their submissions to ensure accuracy. This step is crucial because once submitted, the documented action becomes a permanent, publicly verifiable record on the blockchain transparently showcasing their regenerative impact.

The M.D.R. flow ensures every garden action is documented swiftly, accurately, and enjoyably, turning everyday regenerative work into verifiable, rewarding contributions.

Piloting WIth Greenpill

In the second half of 2025, we’re launching an exciting pilot of Green Goods with Greenpill Chapters across the globe on Celo. Our goal is straightforward yet powerful: to deeply understand how communities use Green Goods in diverse environments and to ensure we're building exactly what users need not just what we imagine.

Participants in this initial pilot span diverse ecological and cultural contexts, including chapters in Brazil, Dominican Republic, Koh Phangan, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, and New York City. These vibrant communities represent a wide range of garden types — from productive farms to conservation and restoration sites — ensuring that Green Goods is tested across different real-world scenarios and user needs.

We're also strategically deploying the app on the Celo blockchain to leverage its rapidly growing regenerative finance ecosystem. With notable projects like the Regen Network recently migrating to Celo, this choice positions Green Goods perfectly to integrate and synergize within a thriving network of environmentally focused projects and initiatives. Common Impact Data Standard being progressed by Regen Coordination can be a standard Green Goods follows for reporting activities completed in the app and thus offload the need of gardeners to manually create the activity report.

By placing user feedback and direct engagement at the heart of our development process, the Green Goods pilot isn’t just an app test, it’s a collaborative effort to refine a tool that will tangibly amplify grassroots regeneration globally.

Within Green Goods, a season of work involves an initial assessment, the execution of on-the-ground work, and a final report — all bundled into a hypercert that captures the entire impact lifecycle. Ownership of shares is distributed among gardeners, the community, and Green Goods itself. Funders can then swap tokens such as ETH or USDC for these shares, thereby providing financial resources to sustain and scale ecological projects. This mechanism aligns incentives and transforms impact into liquid, tradable assets, boosting both transparency and funding efficiency.

• Ecocerts - Building upon the hypercert concept, Ecocerts focus on specific ecological metrics — like carbon sequestration or biodiversity enhancement — offering a refined certification suited for targeted environmental outcomes. By standardizing these metrics on-chain, ecocerts enable precise impact tracking and facilitate the growing demand for credible, verifiable green assets.

• Hedera Guardian Platform - To ensure robust provenance and transparency, Green Goods can integrate with the Hedera Guardian Platform. This platform enables the minting and management of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) aligned tokens on Hedera’s fast and secure Hashgraph network. Starting with attestation-based tokens, Green Goods can mint environmental asset tokens that represent verified ecological contributions, bridging grassroots actions to global ESG markets with auditability and trust.

• Verra - Recognizing the growing potential of blockchain in carbon markets, Verra, the leading global carbon standard setter, has embraced Hedera to digitize carbon credit issuance and tracking. This collaboration paves the way for projects like Green Goods to tokenize ecological work using Hedera’s Guardian platform, seamlessly integrating traditional carbon markets with innovative web3 impact tools. This integration promises greater liquidity, transparency, and accessibility for impact investors and project developers alike.

Tapping Into More Capital Formation Mechanisms

As Green Goods captures and tokenizes tangible environmental impact, the regenerative stack is poised to connect these achievements with increasingly sophisticated capital formation mechanisms. This next phase dives deeper into the world of tokenized environmental assets, expanding how impact can generate meaningful financial support and form sustained capital.

How can a decentralized community measure support and credibility without relying on centralized trackers or manual logs? Enter GreenWill, a tool that turns regenerative actions into a verifiable reputation score and governance tool.

GreenWill is being built by a dedicated team of contributors, including Chris Georgen as project lead, Nansel Rimsah crafting the designs, Matt Strachman sourcing inputs and addresses, myself supporting engineering and development and many others who actively participate in guiding the project’s direction.

Tapping into this social layer is essential for attracting the next wave of Web3 users by providing powerful tools that track their actions and assign meaningful value and context. Within this framework, the Dev Guild is focusing inward, building GreenWill initially as a robust reputation system for the Greenpill Network. In this article, we dive deep into identity and reputation at the social layer of the stack and explore how GreenWill can define a methodology for emerging on-chain communities to adopt for effective and well-informed governance.

Capturing Greenpill Activities

GreenWill captures and tracks on-chain actions such as POAPs, NFTs, and smart contract interactions to measure user engagement and contributions within the Greenpill Network. Initially, GreenWill is focused on a targeted context window — the Network itself — before branching out to chapters, guilds, and eventually broader regen activities such as volunteering, environmental work, writing open sourced code, etc..

• Community Events - Monthly calls and workshops serve as crucial Schelling points. Active participation in these events demonstrates strong engagement and provides valuable context on Network priorities.

• Network Management/Operations - Operational activities, such as managing platforms, hosting community calls, and supporting network members, are vital for keeping the community running smoothly and are in the process of being factored into GreenWill.

• Regen Activities - GreenWill values and rewards regenerative actions like donating to public goods rounds or volunteering within communities. These actions are currently Greenpill specific and as we progress over time to broader regenerative efforts.

• Chapter Engagement - Chapters play a pivotal role in driving local adoption of Web3 and regenerative finance paradigms. Accurately capturing and highlighting these contributions is essential. GreenWill plans to leverages initiatives such as the Common Impact Data Standards (CIDs) reporting framework being deployed by Regen Coordination to standardize impact tracking across diverse activities and locations, ensuring consistency and ease of integration into the GreenWill badge and scoring system.

Building Network Effects

One of the significant advantages of capturing reputation on-chain is leveraging the powerful network effects within our regenerative ecosystem. Several innovative projects are currently developing on-chain primitives designed to reward and incentivize regenerative actions, creating synergies that enhance collective impact and governance.

• Prosperity Pass - Prosperity Passport introduces a verifiable, non-transferable identity solution through Soulbound Tokens (SBTs) that unlock incentives and opportunities within the Celo ecosystem. By integrating a dedicated Greenpill Badge into Prosperity Passport, GreenWill connects directly to these broader regenerative incentives. Community members who earn badges via GreenWill for their verified regenerative contributions can seamlessly gain eligibility for future incentives, airdrops, and governance opportunities within the Celo community. This synergy not only rewards regenerative actions but also encourages deeper community engagement.

• Regen Airdrops - Additionally, GreenWill serves as a valuable and transparent source for regenerative airdrops. By aggregating addresses linked to verifiable community contributions and engagement, GreenWill ensures fairness and accuracy in token distributions, further incentivizing members to engage actively in regenerative activities.

• Greenpill dNFT - The Greenpill dynamic NFT (dNFT), created by Atlantis, offers a unique interactive experience where NFTs evolve visually — from red to green — as holders perform regenerative actions verified through blockchain activities. GreenWill plans to integrates directly with this dNFT mechanism by recognizing and tracking progress, translating these verified regenerative actions into tangible governance power. For example, members holding fully evolved Greenpill NFTs could receive enhanced reputation in GreenWill, thus incentivizing consistent regenerative engagement and unlocking higher governance influence within the Greenpill Network.

Driving Governance

GreenWill currently plays a critical role within the Greenpill Network, enhancing governance by defining clear criteria for participation. For instance, the Gardens funding pool utilizes GreenWill badges as an access requirement for conviction voting, ensuring that only community members who have actively demonstrated their commitment through verifiable actions can participate in key funding decisions.

Additionally, Snapshot can leverage GreenWill badges for both proposal creation and voting rights, aligning voting privileges directly with active and meaningful contributions. Cookie Jars — highlighted in our previous article on the Allo Alliance — can set access permissions based on the quantity and quality of GreenWill badges held, ensuring rapid funding mechanisms benefit engaged contributors.

Initially, GreenWill has primarily served as an allow-listing mechanism to gate access to governance activities. However, moving forward, defining dynamic governance weighting represents the next important frontier. Determining voting weight is inherently complex; it requires balancing flexibility and fairness. Currently, GreenWill assigns equal voting weight to individuals based solely on a simple badge-counting score system. As we gather more comprehensive data such as contributor addresses, on-chain activities, and community interactions our approach will evolve to identify patterns, clusters, and outliers. This deeper analytical process will guide us in defining a robust, equitable, and dynamic governance weighting methodology.

With GreenWill, the network can confidently rely on decisions made by individuals who possess substantial context, proven contributions, and genuine care for the community's direction. Importantly, GreenWill is not intended as a rigid governance solution or a centralized decision-making tool. Instead, its goal is to outline a flexible, replicable methodology. This approach can first benefit the Network and and later extend to the broader regenerative ecosystem. In our previous article on Squad Staking, we explored how a collaborative approach to running Ethereum validators can empower communities and reduce barriers to participation. Now, as funds start to accrue in community pools and treasuries, having clear and reputable mechanisms to allocate those funds is crucial. The Allo Alliance is tackling this challenge head-on. This community of builders and researchers is committed to solving real-world capital allocation problems through innovative Web3 technologies. In this article, we’ll explore the Allo Alliance’s role in building new allocation tools, the benefits of on-chain fund distribution, the novel mechanisms being pioneered, and how these tools connect to broader civic engagement and DAO governance.

A Community Space

The Allo Alliance – as outlined in the first article of this series – began as a conversation around the future of the Allo Protocol. Allo Protocol was formally launched as Allo.Capital, and the Alliance continued as a space for a subset of Allo builders to collaborate and synergize on allocation mechanisms. Builders in the Alliance are pioneering a variety of tools, from Grant Ships, Flow State, Gardens, Karma GAP and more.

Key goals for the Alliance as we move into Q3 include:

• Build for Gitcoin Grants 2024 (GG24): Develop the tooling needed for the next Gitcoin Grants program in the most interoperable way possible.

• Expand to New Markets: Identify 5–10 markets that are ripe for on-chain allocation tooling and pilot solutions there.

• Collaborative Support: Actively support each other’s projects in areas of need (e.g. code reviews, user testing, integrations).

• Sustainability: Secure funding opportunities (grants, investors, or partners) to sustain these efforts over time.

This collaborative development model mirrors the ethos behind Squad Staking. Just as squad staking brings together expertise and resources to strengthen Ethereum’s network, the Allo Alliance brings together knowledge and talent to fortify the infrastructure for funding public goods. By banding together, the Alliance’s builders can iterate faster and learn from each other, accelerating the pace at which new allocation models are tested and deployed.

Benefits Of Onchain Allocation

Why use onchain allocation mechanisms at all? What makes them better than traditional means of allocating capital? Understanding the benefits of on-chain fund allocation helps clarify the problems these tools solve and the value they bring to communities:

• Transparency & Auditability - Immutability is powerful. Every transaction on a public blockchain is recorded on an open ledger, creating a transparent trail of how funds flow. This means anyone can verify that funds went where they were intended, which is a luxury increasingly craved in a world where trust can be hard to establish. By using smart contracts, Allo Alliance tools enable funding processes that are auditable end-to-end.

• Premissioneless Access - Once a capital allocation mechanism is deployed onchain, anyone can access and utilize it. There are no gatekeepers deciding who gets to create or participate in a grant program or funding round. This openness enables broader participation. A small community in one part of the world can spin up the same funding tooling used by a large DAO elsewhere, leveling the playing field. Permissionless systems invite innovation from the edges – people can adapt mechanisms to local needs without asking for permission.

• Composability & Network Effects - Onchain mechanisms benefit from the composability of blockchain “money legos.” When funding tools live on a public blockchain, they can plug into each other and into existing Web3 infrastructure. For example, a grants pool contract could integrate with an identity or reputation system (like Human Passport or GreenWill) to weight contributions, or a streaming payment contract (like Superfluid) to distribute payouts. Because everything is open and interoperable, the network effects can compound – successful mechanisms can be combined to form robust protocols that would be impossible in siloed traditional systems.

• Speed and Efficiency - Blockchain transactions settle in minutes or even seconds, as opposed to the days or weeks typical of traditional finance. For instance, stock trades in traditional markets often take T+2 (two business days) to fully settle, whereas an Ethereum transaction reaches finality within minutes (with each block in ~12 seconds). On-chain allocation can therefore distribute funds almost instantly once decisions are made. Faster settlement not only gets resources in the right hands sooner, but also reduces administrative overhead – no need for lengthy manual disbursement processes or escrow periods.

• Trust through Code - Finally, automating allocation with smart contracts minimizes the need to trust a central authority or committee. The rules (for example, how matching funds are calculated, or under what conditions a payout is released) are encoded in code that executes predictably. This credibly neutral execution can give stakeholders greater confidence in the fairness of the process. Of course, human governance still matters (people write the rules), but once set, on-chain mechanisms can enforce those rules impartially.

In summary, onchain allocation tools bring transparency, openness, interoperability, and speed to the act of funding – qualities that can dramatically improve how public goods and community needs are financed. With those benefits in mind, let’s look at some of the novel mechanisms emerging from the ecosystem.

Mechanism Diversity

The ecosystem of on-chain allocation tools is young yet thriving with innovative mechanisms to distribute capital. Builders within the Alliance are experimenting with everything from quadratic voting and Cookie Jars (micro-grants) to AI-assisted funding, shaping what the future of allocation might look like. Below are a few examples of these diverse mechanisms:

• Quadratic Voting - A voting mechanism that lets participants express the intensity of their preferences, not just their top choice. In quadratic voting, voters are given a budget of credits to allocate across options; casting multiple votes for the same option costs progressively more credits (following a quadratic curve). This way, a participant can strongly support an option they care deeply about, but at significant cost – preventing wealthy stakeholders from simply buying out all the influence. QV aims to reflect the will of the many over the money of the few. It has been used in both Web3 contexts and real-world civic experiments to make collective decisions more fair and nuanced.

• Conviction Voting - A continuous decision-making mechanism where community members signal support for proposals over time rather than in a single up-or-down vote. Each user can stake tokens or voting power behind a proposal, and that support (“conviction”) accumulates gradually. Once a proposal’s conviction crosses a certain threshold (which often depends on the proposal’s requested budget), it becomes eligible for funding. This approach balances momentum with patience – only initiatives with sustained support pass, preventing last-minute vote swings or whales pushing through big proposals without broader buy-in

• Grant Ships - A gamified, modular grants program model developed on Allo Protocol. Grant Ships are essentially “plug-and-play” funding rounds – each a self-contained vessel (hence the space metaphor) with its own scope, team, rules, and budget. Instead of having one giant grants committee trying to handle every proposal, an ecosystem can launch many small grant rounds (many ships) in parallel, each focused on a domain or region. For example, a large DAO might run separate Grant Ships for different regions or project categories simultaneously. This model encourages experimentation with different allocation methods too; one ship could use quadratic funding, another could use a review committee, etc., all within the fleet.

• Streaming (Flow State, Flows) - Not all funding needs to be a one-time grant. Some new mechanisms use streaming payments, where money is distributed continuously over time. Flow State (by Flowstate Cooperative) and Flows.wtf are examples experimenting with streaming quadratic funding and donations. Using Superfluid’s technology for real-time finance, these platforms allow funders to stream money to projects second-by-second, and even adjust streams based on feedback or quadratic formulas. For instance, flows.wtf has been used to funnel donations from NounsDAO to public causes on an ongoing basis, rather than lump sums – it has funneled over $186k via 229 grants since launch. Flow State is bringing quadratic funding into a streaming context, meaning matching funds could be allocated continuously as people donate, smoothing out the funding process. This approach can improve recipients’ financial stability (they receive a steady drip of funds) and give donors flexibility to redirect support dynamically.

• Cookie Jars - “Cookie Jar” is a cheeky name for a mechanism that provides small, on-demand grants for contributors. The idea is akin to having an actual cookie jar of funds that trusted community members can dip into whenever they do useful work. In practice, Cookie Jars are smart contracts from which eligible contributors can withdraw a tiny grant (say $50 or $100) after completing a task or making a verified contribution. This approach is low-friction and fast, avoiding lengthy proposal processes for small needs. For example, a DAO might use a Cookie Jar to reward volunteers who translate documentation or fix minor bugs – they can instantly claim a preset reward from the jar rather than waiting for a quarterly payout.

• Impact QF (AI Evaluation) - One of the more novel frontiers being explored is combining Quadratic Funding (QF) with AI evaluations to enhance the allocation process. Traditional QF uses the wisdom of the crowd (via donations) to direct matching funds, but it doesn’t inherently assess the quality or impact of each project – it just matches based on amount and breadth of support. What if an AI agent could help evaluate the relative impact or importance of proposals, and adjust matching accordingly? Regen Coordination is pioneering a QF with AI/Human evaluation framework that uses the Common Approach to capture regenerative actions with a new methodology named Common Impact Data Standard (CIDs). This was piloted in the Regen Coordination Global round in GG23 and it saw good results with many insights for improvement.

These are just a few of the mechanisms in the toolbox of on-chain allocation. The space is rapidly evolving, with new hybrids and ideas popping up regularly (bonding curve funding, futarchy, and more. The Allo Alliance is playing a key role in incubating and integrating these approaches. Importantly, each mechanism has its strengths – there is no one size fits all. Part of the Alliance’s mission is figuring out which tools work best for which contexts, and ensuring they can be implemented in a user friendly way.

Community Governance

Developing a suite of allocation tools is great, but choosing the right tool for the job is the next challenge. Different communities, whether digital or physical, will benefit from different funding mechanisms and governance models. Here, the interplay between allocation tools and community governance becomes critical.

In local contexts, we’re seeing the rise of Ethereum localism – where smaller regions or city-based communities experiment with blockchain tools to fund local public goods and civic projects. A mechanism like quadratic funding might empower residents of a town to support neighborhood initiatives, whereas a community currency or commitment pooling might make sense for a tightly knit group addressing local needs. Imagine a city council giving each district a “Grant Ship” to run their own participatory budgeting rounds, or a network of climate action groups using conviction voting to decide which projects to tackle first. By tailoring the mechanism to the community, on-chain allocation can reinforce civic engagement rather than replacing it.

In the digital domain, DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) continue to evolve and often need a multitude of tools for various use cases and goals. Governance in many DAOs today is driven by token voting, which has well-known drawbacks – voter fatigue, plutocracy (large token holders dominating votes), low turnout, and so on. Many members simply don’t have the time or context to vote on every proposal, leading to participation disparity. Many DAOs have struggled with these issues: keeping up with every proposal, all-or-nothing votes that fail due to lack of quorum, last-minute voting swings, and other governance pain points. This has prompted communities to explore alternative means of signaling preference and making decisions, beyond just 1-token-1-vote.

One approach, as discussed, is to use new voting mechanisms like conviction voting, quadratic voting, or ranked-choice polling to better capture member sentiment. Another emerging idea is to incorporate AI into governance as a decision support tool. For example, an AI could digest lengthy proposals and provide summaries or risk assessments, helping voters make more informed choices. Some go further and envision AI directly making certain allocations or serving as an impartial arbiter in grant selection (with human oversight).

An Improved Approach To Voting

Ultimately, finding the optimal governance structure is an ongoing journey. Voting in any form works best only up to a certain scale or scope. If a community is voting on too many things at once, or on a very large pool of candidates/projects, the quality of those votes tends to drop. Voters either default to familiar names (turning elections into popularity contests) or opt out entirely due to overload. One promising solution is to organize governance in layers or pods: small groups handle decisions within a focused context, then their results feed into higher-level decisions. This is analogous to how cells form organs, which in turn form a body – each unit makes decisions appropriate to its scale.

For instance, a DAO could have domain-specific sub-councils (for tech, for marketing, for community initiatives) that use detailed allocation tools to make decisions locally. The broader DAO would only vote on aggregated outcomes or big-picture strategy, possibly incorporating quantitative metrics or recommendations from AI. By keeping each “context window” limited, participants can be well-informed and engaged on that slice of governance.

Additionally, combining different governance inputs can yield better results. Rather than relying on a single token vote, a DAO might use a multi-body system: for example, one chamber of long-term token holders using conviction voting, another chamber using quadratic voting open to a broader community (to amplify smaller voices), and perhaps an AI advisory “vote” or analysis – with a proposal needing some degree of consensus across these to pass. This kind of layered approach can mitigate the flaws of any one method and create more resilient decisions.

Importantly, many issues we see with voting (Sybil attacks, vote buying, lack of privacy) can be addressed with blockchain and zero-knowledge primitives. Decentralized digital identity and reputation systems (for Sybil resistance), ZK-SNARKs for private voting, and smart-contract-enforced voting rules can all improve the integrity of governance. The Allo Alliance’s work on funding mechanisms goes hand-in-hand with these governance advances – after all, allocating funds is a form of governance, and better governance means more effective and trusted fund allocation.

Governing Allocation With GreenWill

As we connect the dots, it’s clear that Squad Staking and Allo Alliance are complementary pieces of a bigger puzzle. Squad Staking demonstrated how the infrastructure and ownership of a network (Ethereum) can be made more accessible and community-driven. Allo Alliance has focused on how resources in those communities (funds, capital) can be distributed more wisely and fairly. Next up is GreenWill, which takes aim at measuring and rewarding the human contributions that fuel the regenerative finance ecosystem. In our previous article, we introduced the concept of a regenerative stack. Now, at the foundation of that stack lies squad staking — a method for multiple people to collectively stake a total of 32 ETH. By pooling resources, squad staking removes the burden of having to be a solo operator with the full 32 ETH and dramatically lowers the cost barrier to participate in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus. Leading the charge in this paradigm are Obol, Dappnode, and Lido, which together provide the software, hardware, and economic framework to make squad staking a reality. Within the Dev Guild, we believe staking can become a foundational source of public goods funding, aligning individual incentives with collective benefit.

Obol, Dappnode & Lido

Obol has been pioneering Distributed Validator Technology (DVT) since 2021, enabling validators to be run by a cluster of people or organizations instead of a single operator. This technology makes “squad staking” possible by splitting a validator key across multiple nodes (and operators) who act in unison. Obol’s DVT has even been integrated into the Dappnode OS, meaning anyone running a Dappnode can easily set up a distributed validator cluster.

Meanwhile, Dappnode provides the plug-and-play hardware side of the equation. A Dappnode is a specialized device (running a custom OS) optimized for blockchain nodes and staking. It drastically lowers the technical barrier to entry for new stakers by taking care of the technical stuff and providing a simple, user-friendly interface – no command-line expertise required. In other words, Dappnode makes it “easy for anyone to play a role in creating an open, equitable internet and access the rewards that are offered in return”. By combining Obol’s DVT software with Dappnode’s hardware, even non-experts can host part of a validator from home with minimal hassle.

The final piece of the squad staking puzzle is Lido. Through Lido’s Community Staking Module (CSM), squad stakers get a boost in the form of a sponsored ETH bond. In traditional solo staking you’d need 32 ETH, and even in protocols like Rocket Pool you currently need 8 ETH to spin up a minipool (the protocol matches the other 24 ETH). Lido’s CSM lowers the capital requirement even further – node operators can start with as little as a 1.5–2.4 ETH bond (depending on the stage) to register a validator key, and the Lido protocol supplies the rest of the stake. This permissionless entry opens the door for many more community members to become validators. In short, Obol and Dappnode provide the infrastructure (software + hardware) and Lido provides an economic on-ramp, collectively making squad staking accessible to a much wider audience than ever before.

Economics Of Squad Staking

Let’s talk numbers and why squad staking is so compelling. First, obtaining a suitable node machine (e.g. a Dappnode or DIY rig) is an upfront cost – but once you have hardware, you can put it to work in many ways. A single Ethereum node can run multiple validator instances in parallel: for example, you could solo stake 32 ETH, or run a Rocket Pool minipool with 8 ETH bonded, or join a squad-staking cluster via Obol DVT – or even do all of the above at once if your hardware is robust enough. This means one machine can leverage economies of scale by securing several validators across different protocols.

With Obol’s DVT in particular, a single operator can be part of multiple validator “squads” on one machine, effectively multiplying their staking rewards without needing separate hardware for each validator. For instance, one Dappnode device might participate in 5 different DVT clusters simultaneously, contributing to 5 validators at once. Compare this to traditional solo staking where one machine = one validator: the difference in potential yield is significant. Obol also introduced the Techne credential (non-transferable NFT badges) for node operators, which helps new or small operators build reputation. Earning a Techne credential signals to the community that a squad member has proven their skills and reliability — opening the door to opportunity with blockchains and protocols seeking validators.

In summary, the economics of squad staking offer lower individual cost and higher collective output. A quick comparison:

• Solo Staking: 32 ETH required per validator; one person shoulders it all. Yields ~4–5% APY on that 32 ETH (all rewards to one staker).

• Rocket Pool (8 ETH minipool): 8 ETH required (plus some RPL) for the node operator; the protocol or pool provides the other 24 ETH thedefiant.io . The operator earns a commission (e.g. ~14%) on the pooled stake in addition to their portion of rewards, increasing their effective yield on the 8 ETH (but they do need to stake RPL as insurance).

• Obol Squad Staking (via DVT): Only a fraction of 32 ETH is effectively required per person (for example, 4 people could each contribute 8 ETH to collectively run one validator, or with Lido’s CSM one might bond ~2–3 ETH and get 32 ETH allocated). Rewards (the ~5% APR on 32 ETH) get split among the operators or go to whoever contributed stake, depending on the arrangement. However, each operator can join multiple validator squads, so one machine with, say, 5 validators in 5 different clusters means that operator is helping secure at minimum 160 ETH of stake in total. Their share of rewards across those could be roughly 5x what a single validator would earn, proportional to their stake and any fees. In essence, one rig can do the work of many, especially when cooperating with others.

The ability to scale up one’s participation this way is a game changer. It turns staking from a one-dimensional activity into a more flexible, potentially higher-yield endeavor – all while contributing to network decentralization.

Public Good Squad Staking

Now, how does squad staking tie into funding public goods? This is where regenerative finance principles come in. We believe that with the right incentives, squad staking can provide a sustainable income stream for public goods (think open-source infrastructure, community projects, climate initiatives, etc.). Here’s the vision:

Through partnerships, we are working to secure hardware discounts (for example, subsidized Dappnode/Chainnode units) and bond sponsorships (covering that 2.4 ETH CSM bond via Lido) for squads who are committed to public-good staking. In practical terms, this means a motivated squad who lacks capital could receive a nearly free setup — but in return, they pledge a portion of their validator’s rewards to public goods funding. The suggested minimum is 16% of their yield, donated over agreed period of time to public goods projects. This creates a win-win cycle: the squad gets to participate in Ethereum and earn the remaining rewards, and public goods projects get a steady drip of funding without relying on one-off grants or charity.

What does 16% of yield look like? Suppose a validator earns ~1 ETH in rewards over a year (for easy math). A 16% share of that is 0.16 ETH. If that validator is part of, say, 5 squads (as discussed earlier), their yearly public good contribution could be ~0.8 ETH. Now imagine 10 such validators in a cohort – that’s 8 ETH/year donated. Scale it to 100 validators and we’re looking at 80 ETH per year (worth hundreds of thousands of dollars) fueling public goods continuously. Even on smaller scales, a handful of public-good squad validators could funnel on the order of hundreds or thousands of dollars every year to funding causes, creating a positive feedback loop between Ethereum’s success and social impact.

Of course, this model relies on those validators truly committing to the cause. That’s why we focus on aligning incentives up front (via the hardware and bond support) and fostering a community ethos where participants want to give back. In our view, it’s a modest “tax” for doing good — as Samwise might say, there’s some good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.

Empowering Communities

A particularly transformative aspect of Squad Staking is its potential in developing countries. Hardware partnerships, such as subsidized Dappnodes, significantly reduce upfront investment. By offering discounted or sponsored hardware, we open participation to under-resourced communities, enabling them to earn ongoing staking rewards. These rewards can be directly funneled into critical local initiatives:

• Education & Skill Development: Fund blockchain education, workshops, and training sessions, creating long-term local technical capacity.

• Infrastructure Improvements: Support projects in clean energy, water purification, and sustainable agriculture, directly improving community well-being.

• Economic Independence: Provide a consistent funding stream for local businesses and cooperatives, fostering financial resilience and independence.

This decentralized infrastructure transforms into a community-owned asset, empowering local populations with not only financial returns but also the skills and resources needed to sustain long-term regenerative growth. Key to powering this infrastructure are technologies such as low orbit satellite internet, which enable validator nodes to be deployed in regions with unreliable connectivity and uptime, overcoming a major hurdle in the expansion of DePin networks. In Nigeria, Starlink has started to see large adoption and enables even the most rural locations to access to reliable internet and thus be a node in the network.

Transitioning to the Allo Alliance

Squad staking, as the base layer of our regenerative stack, empowers more people to secure Ethereum together and channels a portion of that value to the public commons. This groundwork naturally leads us to the next layer of our journey: the Allo Alliance at the protocol layer. If squad staking is about decentralized infrastructure and grassroots fundraising, the Allo Alliance is about coordinating and deploying those funds for maximum impact. These layers intertwine to create a sustainable funding loop for regenerative projects.

Throughout this series, we’ll dive into our four-layered approach: why it’s important, how we plan to validate its success, what it looks like technically, and where/when we plan to deploy it. Below is an outline of the series:

• Pioneering A Regenerative Stack – An introduction to the Dev Guild’s stack as it exists today and how we arrived at this point.

• Squad Staking – How staking (32 ETH in a squad) can generate yield and create perpetual funding for public goods.

• Allo Alliance – An exploration of on-chain capital formation/allocation mechanisms (from streaming funds to “cookie jars”) for growing and distributing capital under various access controls.

• GreenWill – Understanding how tracking regenerative actions and contributions can inform the allocation of funds and community governance.

• Green Goods – Using simple, accessible tools to capture impact data and feed it into reputation and governance systems within communities.

• Capital Formation – How this stack can plug into external capital formation mechanisms, particularly by bundling impact into tokenized forms via Green Goods.

• Validating The Regenerative Stack – Our plans to test and analyze the stack’s effectiveness, and the roadmap we’ll follow to iterate and scale.

Who We Are

As we dive into the stack, it’s worth highlighting the builders driving these initiatives. The Greenpill Dev Guild is a community of regenerative builders with diverse skill sets, from design to engineering distributed throughout the globe. Many members join to learn and grow in new or less familiar areas, with the Guild also serving as a sandbox for developing those skills. Continuous learning is one of our core values: by educating ourselves and collaborating, we fuel growth internally and then share that growth with the wider community.

Education & Resources

Since the beginning of 2025, the Dev Guild has hosted 8 workshops. Some were Greenpill centric sessions to support new chapter onboarding (covering topics like Charmverse and multisig basics), while others were more partnership-focused (for example, collaborating with Gardens – a conviction-voting funding platform – and with Allo Capital to facilitate a DAO design contest). To reinforce our workshops, we created follow-up assessments to ensure that attendees retained the core knowledge shared during the calls. Workshops have become a real strength of the Dev Guild and a service we can readily deliver for any regen community that wants to learn about key new tools.

Branding & Design

We’ve also invested heavily in design and branding across our projects (and for the Guild itself). If you’ve been following the Guild for a while, you probably noticed our recent rebrand. This was the result of a brand kit contest coordinated by Kit (one of our leads) and I, which led to 13 diverse submissions. The contest produced a new cohesive brand identity for the Greenpill Dev Guild along with a suite of visual assets that any Greenpill chapter or guild can use.

After the contest, our leads Nansel and Kit ran branding workshops to synthesize the results into a unified set of brand guidelines. Recently, we kicked off an initiative to create infographics to further spread the Guild’s message and knowledge. Sofi, an avid builder in the space, took the lead in crafting many of the infographics you’ll see throughout this series. These beautifully crafted designs set the tone and emphasize the projects we build.

Supporting Greenpill

One of our core missions is to support Greenpill Chapters with tools for community coordination, impact reporting, and capital formation. Three major Dev Guild initiatives exemplify this focus: Green Goods, GreenWill, and Squad Staking.

• Green Goods – Green Goods is our innovative biodiversity impact-tracking app, designed for ease of use directly from your browser as a progressive web app (PWA). Our goal is simple yet ambitious: empower gardeners to effortlessly document their environmental work and transform their efforts into transparent, on-chain ecocerts and credits. These digital assets can then be aggregated and sold, providing tangible rewards for regenerative actions. Over recent months, we've dedicated significant resources to refining the app’s user experience, implementing multi-language support, and integrating account abstraction through Privy. We’re now gearing up for a Q3 pilot involving 5–10 community gardens and farms across Greenpill Chapters, creating a robust feedback loop from user research directly into ongoing product development.

• GreenWill – GreenWill is an essential tool for tracking community participation and reputation within the Greenpill ecosystem. It helps recognize and reward regenerative actions, providing crucial insights for allocating funds and granting governance privileges. Think of GreenWill as a regenerative “reputation meter” that integrates seamlessly with the Guild.xyz platform, translating active engagement into tangible rewards. By highlighting community members who consistently contribute, actively engage, and support their peers, GreenWill fosters a governance system based on merit and participation. Currently, GreenWill is powering applications such as the Greenpill Badge in Prosperity Pass, governance via conviction voting in Garden funding pools, and eligibility criteria for upcoming regenerative airdrops.

• Squad Staking – Public Good Squad Staking is an initiative we’re building in collaboration with Obol to create a sustainable source of funding for public goods. It enables multiple participants to collectively stake the 32 ETH required to operate an Ethereum validator, significantly lowering entry barriers for community validators. The regenerative element emerges from our commitment to allocate a meaningful percentage of the generated staking yield directly towards public goods initiatives such as the Greenpill Network. We have successfully set up our genesis squad (Greenpill Ottawa, New York City, and the Dev Guild) and are poised to begin staking on Ethereum’s mainnet, pledging 20% of our yield back to the Network. Additionally, we are currently queued for delegated ETH through Lido’s Community Staking Module (CSM), empowering operators who lack the full 32 ETH to participate. Our roadmap includes onboarding an additional 3–5 validator squads throughout Q3 and Q4.

These three initiatives demonstrate our dedication to Greenpill’s mission and to public goods generally. With the community’s support, we will continue to refine and advance these projects so they can deliver even greater benefits.

Allo Alliance

Capital allocation is another pillar of the Guild’s work. Today, there are many exciting on-chain allocation mechanisms being pioneered (quadratic funding, streaming, ranked voting, etc.), and many are built on the Allo Protocol. This protocol comprises standardized contracts that simplify the creation of diverse funding mechanisms and their connection to impactful projects. To better navigate this landscape, the Allo Alliance emerged as a collaborative network of builders and researchers focused on understanding, developing, and promoting interoperability among these tools.

The Alliance initially took shape from discussions sparked by Kevin Owocki’s insightful forum post, “Allo + Gitcoin — do they make more sense together or separate?” Several workshops and strategy calls allowed us to align on the immense potential of the Allo protocol and explore how we could best steward its growth in ways that benefit builders and communities alike. Shortly after these discussions, Allo.Capital was announced as a new spin-off focused on building the on-chain capital allocation layer. Much of our energy shifted to supporting Allo.Capital’s launch.

The Dev Guild transitioned our early workshops into the broader Allo.Capital community, opening doors for wider collaboration. These sessions yielded significant outputs, such as an insightful impact-vs-time matrix and comprehensive comparisons of DAO contest design proposals. Since then, the Alliance has maintained weekly calls, regularly syncing ideas, identifying strategic synergies, and refining quarterly objectives. Our recent collaborative efforts in Q2 included developing and managing grant rounds, conducting market research for new funding pathways, uncovering novel use cases, and importantly providing a welcoming space for builders to collaborate and recharge between intense development sessions.

Building Momentum: What Comes Next

We accomplished a lot in the first half of this year with minimal resources. In the Gitcoin Grants Rounds we participated in, we finished Top 5 in the Apps & Dapps round (out of 142 projects) and 2nd in the Regen Coordination Global round (which combined quadratic funding with AI/human evaluation). These results help validate that we’re building the right tools and heading in the right direction.

Over the next few days, we’ll dive deep into each layer of the stack starting grounds up with squad staking. With squad staking we will highlight the top organizations advancing the movement and how it can create a sustainable source of funds for public goods. We'll dive into how squad staking connects to Decentralized Physical Infrastructure (DePin) and creates community pools of funds to allocate to local initiatives.
