Threema changes ownership
Threema Holding AG, the owner of the famous private messaging app "Threema", was acquired by the private equity firm Comitis Capital, based in Frankfurt, from Afinum Management in January 2026.
Comitis Capital's previous acquisitions include:
· Cloud 7, a company specializing in premium dog beds.
· The Tofoo Company, a tofu manufacturer.
Threema was launched in 2012 and has 10 million users, mainly in German-speaking countries, and is used by the Swiss Army and the German government.
Its servers remain in Switzerland, but ownership is now under German control, and there is no known prior interest in privacy.
From Threema they say the following:
"Nothing will change for our users as a result of the change from Afinum (DE) to Comitis (DE). Our core values, the company's mission, and management will remain unchanged. Comitis will support us in further consolidating our position in the areas of security and data protection"
Comitis Capital claims that Threema's core values, corporate mission, and management remain unchanged, but the founders left in September 2024, which makes every step more questionable.
