But to answer the spirit of the question, Bitcoin isn’t a growing currency, it’s a growing platform. I’ll explain in two points. #1 Crypto-currencies v. Crypto-platforms Bitcoin was originally developed as a currency. It uses blockchain technology to power the coin—specifically to track who owns it and how much was spent. It was rightly called a cryptocurrency, then, because it used cryptographic hashes to secure that process. Ethereum turned that idea on its head. Rather than use a blockchain to power a coin, why not use a coin to power the blockchain? Ethereum is a global computer, so it’s a computing platform, and it runs other applications (called D’Apps) on it. In order to run those applications, you need to spend ETH. This was a marvelous idea that has spawned all kinds of new technology, including decentralized exchanges, Non-fungible tokens, decentralized autonomous organizations, synthetic stocks, crypto lending, and crypto-insurance. Those don’t all run on Etherum (I linked several on the Terra blockchain), but the idea started there. Crypto-platforms have much more potential than the original idea for Bitcoin, and that’s why, right now, the fight is to make faster and cheaper platforms. Ethereum was first and so has 90% of all the D’Apps on it, but others like SOL and Terra (LUNA) are presently much faster and cheaper. They’re working to take Ethereum’s market share before it can update. And in all of this, Bitcoin is still just a currency. But that is going to change. #2 The Taproot Upgrade Realizing that the future for cryptos will have little to do with currencies and everything to do with platforms, Bitcoin is upgrading to have functioning smart contracts (Bitcoin actually already had this technology and the first NFTs were on it, but it wasn’t very useful). To explain, the way that platforms work is through “smart contracts,” which are just “if … then” instructions. Since computer programs are just “if … then” instructions (for the most part), having smart contracts = having the ability to host other programs. Bitcoin’s upgrade is the Taproot Upgrade and it's already in its testing phase. It will be fully deployed in November. When this is complete, it’ll transform from a cryptocurrency to a cryptoplatform. Then its main problems will be (1) developing apps that (2) people use. To get people to use it, Bitcoin will have to be fast. It’s slower than Ethereum, and Ethereum is too slow already. So, that’s where it’ll need to focus. If Bitcoin can’t manage that, then it’ll probably still continue as a proven store of value as a basic financial anchor layer. Concluding Thoughts Cryptocurrencies will continue to grow. A new project, Wing Finance, is trying to introduce credit scores internal to the blockchain system. If that project is fully successful, then cryptocurrencies will effectively be able to replace banking as we know it. More than likely, there will be a new hybrid banking system with cryptos expanding into areas where traditional finance hasn’t been able to enter (e.g. the developing world). Bitcoin will have a future in that, and I see at least a 3x bounce in the next bull run because it is a proven store of value. To do 20x, it’ll have to succeed as a crypto-platform and beat all the competitors that have years of advances on it. That would put its market cap at about $20 trillion, or the size of M2 (the total free US dollars presently). It could happen, but it’s not my primary bet. The 3x return seems likely to me. I think Ethereum has the best shot at becoming the world’s top platform token and squeezing out all the competition. If it did that, then it would shoot up 85x from its present value. A more likely scenario, however, is that there would be about 3 winners (dividing up that $20 trillion pie). In that case, if ADA takes a top 3 slot, it would do 163x from its present value. If SOL took a top 3 spot, it would shot up an astronomical 786.5x. And if LUNA managed to get into the top 3, it would make it to the moon with a 2203x return. So, yes it’s a crypto winter. But there’s a reason why people say riches are made in a bull run, wealth in a bear market. Happy Trading!
