Hello i’m Samson Bula and I am a wayfarer of life. I shall be writing my creative statement as part of a group activity i’m apart of in the web3 space called Daedalus.
I’ll be writing this using the framework given to us by France Cathryn titled,
“How to redefine your value in the arts industry”
I will be answering a list of questions outlined in the above mentioned framework and will be dot pointing them for ease for me lol.
What drives you to make what you do?
Why do you stay dedicated to your practice?
What does success look like for you?
Is this interpretation different than how others might define it?
As an artist, how do you understand your role in your community, or in society more broadly?
Do you feel a sense of responsibility to engage a specific audience?
Why or why not?
Primarily I am driven by an urge to understand the conscious reality of nature and the things i craft are a by product of my quest from drawings, paintings, poems, meditative techniques, songs, cooking, systems, philosophy, scribed musings and magick.
i’m dedicated to my practice because i love exploring what reality has to offer, I’ve travelled to many places around the world and have been touched by so many cultures and their ancient heritages and i want to see and experience through my senses transcendental realities and how it can be of benefit to others to have peace, contentment and their needs met and happiness.
Success to me is a thank you for my service, someone’s smile being touched by beauty from some work i made, being able to give an appropriate answer to a troubling question, a good laugh with friends, enhancing skills that i have worked hard on that i put into more works. I think my idea of success is being a beneficial influence on the world around me.
My role in the community is to be a unique weirdo as it gives others permission to be more of themselves, however much they want to be in day to day life.
I feel a lot of responsibility to be a good role model and plant trees that when fully grown sustain later generations and to be honest sometimes its overwhelming and i’m not sure where or how to start haha! as Lao Tzu says “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” and this is satisfying to me.
What topics or cultural conversations are related to your work?
How will the context in which your work is shown (a gallery wall, a public park, a computer screen) affect the meaning viewers take away from it?
Where does your work fit in the history of art making, and of your community more broadly?
Would including your voice in the conversation silence others?
Weaving of ancient animistic belief systems and practices into the current meta of reality. Topics include Occult Sciences, Internal Alchemy, Shamanism, East and West Philosophy and Spiritual Traditions. in which ever medium my art has been imbibed within id like the consumer to remember a tale The buddha once said to imagine someone is trying to show you the moon by pointing at it. The pointing finger is what guides you to the moon. Without the finger, you might not notice the moon.
But the pointing finger isn’t what matters most. It only matters because it helps you see the moon for yourself.
Which is why the Buddha also warned us not to mistake the finger for the moon.
My work i hope can bridge the gap between the world of our ancestors that was close with nature and the modern world it would be nice to update spiritual narratives of old to make sense and be functional in the present.
I cannot say if i will silence others i’m hoping to uplift others and the diverse cultures and realities that exist.
What can someone take away from the experience of interacting with your work?
How could connecting with your art change viewers’ personal interpretations of themselves and their places in society?
Who is your work for?
Does your work empower others to find their voice, or to find more meaning in daily life?
In a way id like people to gain a muse from interacting with my work, a muse that guides them to living a fulfilling and joyous life in what ever form they so choose.
by connecting to my work id like it to change peoples views on self acceptance and good will towards ones individual identity and a re-evaluation of ones conduct in their surroundings that fosters positive reciprocral relations with others and nature.
my work is for people who like exploring the depths of ones nature and self awareness, people who enjoy the mysteries of the subtle forces of life. its also for people who feel they have lost their way and need a hand finding their way back.
i hope my work does empower others but i can never know until it is out there and people say so.
I will leave you guys with one of my favorite Taoist paintings of Chuang Tzu.
