Imagine a bus stop with thousands of people waiting to board the next bus. A new bus arrives every 15 minutes or so, but each bus has only 50 seats. The seats on the bus are auctioned off to the highest bidder.If at least 50 people are willing to pay $1,000 to get on the bus, then the price of the ticket will be at least $1,000. If people are willing to pay 10 dollars at most, then the price will be 10 dollars or less. But if you only have $10 and there are hundreds of people willing to pay $1,000, you may have to wait a while before you can get on the bus.Unfortunately, waiting in line at the bus station does not necessarily give you an advantage. If someone keeps showing up willing to pay more than you, they will continue to be prioritized, even if you wait longer there.This is a slightly simplified version of the way the Ethereum Gas auction works. Ethereum blocks are mined approximately every 15 seconds. Each Ethereum block has a maximum size, which limits the amount of data that can be contained. The current maximum block size is set to 12.5M Gas, and the last increase was in July 2020. Since the maximum block size is in gas units, and different transactions have different gas usage according to their complexity, there is no consistent maximum value for the number of transactions that can be contained in a block. But on average, each block contains approximately 160-200 transactions.
