REBOOT

I was recently working on an assignment that required me to research endocrine abnormalities, specifically hypothyroidism. When I thought about hypothyroidism, the first person that came to mind was my own mother. Ever since I can remember, I've seen her take tiny pills from a brown bottle daily. I always assumed it was a routine ailment she had been diagnosed with at some point and that she had been managing ever since.

It was only recently that I discovered she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in her late 20s while trying to conceive. The questions I asked her were quite basic, but her answers surpassed anything I expected. Her reflections on her personal journey as a young woman starting a family shed light on so many aspects of her life that I had missed.

As children, we often see our parents merely as caregivers, individuals who have been looking after us for years, often putting our needs ahead of their own. It is only much later that we realise the unique trajectories of their lives. The eloquence with which my mother recounted the details of her struggles with hypothyroidism made me appreciate her anew. I had conveniently forgotten how brilliant a writer she is. Her profound understanding of her emotional well-being, the impact of her upbringing, and her access to resources were eye-opening.

Many of us have the intellectual and philosophical inclination to make sense of situations around us but are limited by words to express them. It was humbling to be reminded that my mother possessed both the insight and the ability to articulate it.

My mother gave up her career after she conceived me and has devoted herself to caring for her two children for the past 30 years. She now wishes to return to writing. Give her any topic to research, even those seemingly out of her depth, and she will bring her unique perspective to it.

If any of you know of parttime gigs that she can undertake as an independent content writer or researcher, please let me know. She is willing to do test assignments as-well to effectively demonstrate her skills.Thank you!
