Threads - hit or a miss?

I had been contemplating what to post on Threads for the past two days, considering the opportunity it holds in terms of their pre built access to an audience whose psychographics one is already familiar with, its a fantastic ground for new founders and influencers to grasp the chance to revamp their MO to better entice and engage their intrigued existing audience.

However, keeping that prospect aside for myself for the time being, I can't help but notice the uncanny similarities between Threads and #Orb (a decentralised Social Media platform). Ive been using Orb for a while and although its UI/UX is still in its preliminary phases, it has captured a cohort of thinkers who seek extremely high value addition in the content they consume.

Threads onboarding strategy, which was no doubt a masterstroke in itself, will struggle to make the platform a podium of meaningful information exchange and differentiate itself in terms of how users interact with and showcase each other as opposed to what is already being done on Instagram. Something, which Orb does not necessarily struggle with.

Mosseri made his first remark on what he envisions threads to accomplish for its users by it being a platform that encourages “back and forth” conversations, stating that if that’s not one's agenda of interaction, then reverting to instagram would be a better fit. The push and intention to facilitate “Twitter like” intellectuals seems to be a major focus. Laborius to achieve in my opinion.

Their phase one UA strategy included the limitation of deleting the Threads account, by aligning its dependency on the primary Instagram account. A calculated risk and decision, which they already knew they would need to recall soon enough or find alternatives (which would already be in the pipeline, just undisclosed). This incubation period where users will focus on evaluating the kind of gratification this new shiny platform gives will give the team enough time to focus on how to filter the audience and manage churn rate, only to retain users that would achieve their long term product market fit.

When the proliferation of new features in the coming weeks hits the app, it will be interesting to see how things unfold when their upgraded algorithm kicks in.
