Building In Public

What does building in public really look like?

When I think about building in public, even though I see so many people in the tech space stating and doing this, a few things run through my mind. Is building in public like seeing ants build an ant hill in a yard or a bird looking for items to create a nurturing and secure nest? If so, I know as humans we have an extraordinary advantage to do things that animals and insects do not have, which is observing nature and letting that reflect in our world as a way to create.

Just so you know, this writing is not about a theory of being right or wrong, it's more of an exploration and reflection of how I seriously am coming to terms with Building in Public and what that looks like for me. One reason is so that I can find my tribe, and another reason is so that even past this writing, as I continue to learn about the very tool I'm utilizing such as blockchain, etc., I can share with others along the way and even collaborate with like minds to bring clarity for people who will soon still be trying to figure out what the heck they are doing on the block and chain (insert humor).

Back to the subject at hand. I'm having this connection of analogies of how Building in Public reflects nature and some very common things we see every day. Construction is another way we can recognize building in public. A great construction company will build in public to completion, while also, I'm sure you've seen a home or construction site that didn't get completed. This is reminding me of a house down the street from where I grew up where the home was being built for going on 20 years. It stopped for a long time, and even now I'm not sure what's happening, but it's an example of building in public.

Seeing (BIP) happen all around us in major cities every day is what lets me know building is the creator's way. Most of the time, real Building in Public is already having plans in place; you already know what it is you're about to do from start to finish. This brings up for me identifying slow builds when things just happen to come together because you are steadily being clued in on what it will take to build. This can relate to a new career, new skill, and anything that will be a benefit to yourself for nurturing something in you and also benefiting the world.

Online on social media, it could seem like it's building openly as you or someone figures it out. Which some people may do with or without a plan. I assume that it can also be similar to thinking someone is Building in Public, but they actually already have specific or certain things in place or in play, so you really only see the outcome of something already completed or iterations and updates to keep moving forward with the long-term vision. Building in Public can also be similar to documenting your journey (DOJ) on social media so people can see you along the way or so you can have a trail of receipts showing what it took and how you reached the level people see you at. People can also decide to join you on your journey, and/or back to finding your tribe, because the act of creating something that people resonate with builds up a collective community you never knew you could have.

Why I may have a fear of Building in Public:

Maybe my logical mind is trying to figure out: does that mean spilling out everything as you do it? Like, "Hey guys, I just added a new button to our page after split testing 69 variations with AI in 30 seconds and this button works. If you see this post, can you try it for me?" (Sidenote: that example just came to me as I'm typing this, so bear with me; there's a mix of serious practical humor here.)

Is it similar to writing a transparent shareholder letter or creating a video like we see many do as they transition in life from DoorDash driver to YouTube sensation? At this point, anything's possible. It could be as simple as writing and minting this NFT as I'm doing to start a new journey in this realm of space and time with blockchain, NFTs, and decentralization. Does it mean stating what you are working on at the time it's happening or after things are solid and built for the first phase? It could also reflect how people do pre-sales for an idea or product to gauge how many people actually are interested. Or does it mean being on X or a forum and asking for help on something?

And for people who do not feel like they are building anything, maybe you are writing, or growing and becoming more aware of yourself so building up in that way, or maybe sharing information in some way—I think it all still applies. I do not want you to limit your perception of Building in Public as this is what we see happen every day reflected in nature and on social media or any platforms. Also, radically accepting the phase of building that you are in. Taking time to really see and create the immediate plan and vision that should practically come to life. So for me, this is my way of building and creating in public, and hopefully whether it becomes a trail of receipts of my journey and/or it leads to attracting the right community of people, there's only one way to find out...
