It is becoming evident which marketing strategies are effective for chains and which are not.
Optimism: Airdropped in 2022. Incentivized liquidity to attract users to ecosystem.
Polygon: The “Retail” Blockchain. I don’t think we have a long enough time horizon to see full user activity and retention. When the Web2 crowd jumps on the Web3 boat, Polygon should go neck and neck with Arbitrum, perhaps even surpassing it.
Binance Smart Chain: Benefits from the Binance exchange (currently the #1 exchange by volume) as well as user activity in Asia and LATAM. Note that much of this activity is also fueled by paid crypto influencers and KOLs.
Tron: ???
Everyone talks about Arbitrum’s organic and grassroots growth. Unique DAU, bridge users, dApps. A vibrant DeFi ecosystem. What gives?
Tribalism: If you haven’t noticed, tribalism goes hard on this chain. The most avid and passionate users call themselves “Arbinauts” or have (💙,🧡) in their Twitter handle. Many Arbinauts have expressed feeling more connected to this community than any other chain, whether it be Avalanche, Optimism, or Polygon.
Partnerships: A lot of this is driven by the Dopex team (or Tetranode), but partnership across projects is uncommon in Arbitrum. Whether its PlutusDAO x REDACTED, Dopex x Jones, these integrations and upcoming partnerships allow users to easily flow across communities, thus creating a sticky user base.
That said, I remain skeptical about this "organic growth." How much of it is really airdrop farming? Can we trust the metrics? Only time will tell.
Yesterday, Uniswap released its Mini Portfolio, a feature that enables users to view their assets on the Uniswap Web App. Users can now view their tokens, NFTs, LP pools, and transaction history. I’m glad Uniswap is taking crypto UX a huge leap forward.
