It’s been almost a month since I tried my hand at writing. At the time, I wanted to further my knowledge of computer science, engineering, blockchain and share my findings with the world. I feel like these topics are written by people who — in my opinion — fail to keep their readers hooked for one simple reason: technical jargon. Let me explain: blog posts are written by and for people who have skin in the game. This creates a high barrier of entry for anyone from newcomers to the non-technical curious who want a deeper understanding of the fundamentals, the technology they use at work or for pleasure. This “lack of effective communication” causes readers to be lost, discouraged, or worse, give up.
I set myself a writing challenge with one major constraint: each article must be written in one day. Why this constraint? Because it forces me to focus on the core concepts, to think carefully about the structure and how to convey the ideas.I asked myself which topic I will cover after writing my first article and second article. Would it be about hash functions or my love for grappling ? What about the inner-working of an electric vehicle ? Or blockchains projects that daily try to give financial exposure to less fortunate people. As days passed, I could not decide myself on what to focus. Then the idea came to me: “Why not write about my experience with writing, its benefits and why more people should start writing,” I thought.
In addition to improving my thought process, it has fed my voracious mind. Indeed, I acquire as thorough a grasp as possible of certain basic concepts, enter and (hopefully!) exit the rabbithole. Why “hopefully” ? The more you write, the more questions you ask yourself : how should I write it, is it intelligible, would Billy understand it ? To me this is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable part about writing !
Raise your hand if it is hard for your mind to stop thinking ! It is also the case for me. We can agree that it is sometimes tiring. This may contradict what I said above and seem paradoxical, but I found that writing was a way for my mind to free itself. Allow me this pleonasm but all the unstructured noise in your mind becomes clearer and/or secondary once it is put down on a piece of paper or… on your screen. What was in your head and you felt was primary suddenly becomes secondary. Your mind is freed and you can focus on something else more efficiently.
L’écriture, toute écriture, reste une audace et un courage. Et représente un énorme travail” — Michèle Mailhot
You should write about yourself, your thoughts, your feelings, anything that comes to mind that sometimes gets in the way of clear and objective judgment*, i.e. the ability to form valuable opinions and make good decisions*. It is of course up to you to share (or not) your notes.
I will continue to write. I will not only write about engineering and computer science, but also about other topics that interest and fascinate me.
Writing fosters creativity. Writing is Art.
