Beautiful locations, lively characters, impressive special effects - together with MSI, we figure out who is responsible for filling video games.
Modern video games are the same works of art, like, for example, films. In addition to entertaining mechanics and difficult levels, they have fascinating stories, interesting characters, and a well-developed world. Large teams of technical and creative specialists work on their creation. Let's talk about a few key participants in the process.
A game designer is like a movie director. His task is to make a quality project that will give gamers a unique user experience. To do this, he thinks through the mechanics and rules, creates descriptions and moodboards for worlds, characters and levels, determines the complexity of tasks and obstacles. And most importantly, he monitors the implementation of ideas at all stages of game production: he gives feedback to scriptwriters on dialogues, helps illustrators find the right solutions for locations, and sound engineers - the right melodies and effects.
Large game companies employ not one, but several game designers, and each of them specializes in a specific task. For example, a core gameplay designer thinks through the rules and mechanics, while a level designer thinks about dividing the game into semantic segments and their content.
A game writer, like a film writer, turns an idea into a compelling story. It is he who prescribes plot twists, conflicts and dialogues, works out lore (mythology of the game world), characters, biographies of heroes and relationships between them. He also prepares all pop-up texts, such as descriptions of items or locations.
In some cases, a narrative game designer comes to the aid of a screenwriter. He deals with the integration of story and mechanics - looking for the perfect combination of actions and tasks that would help the player dive deeper into the story.
When the idea and images are thought out, it's time to visualize. Several specialists are usually responsible for creating images in games at once:
The art director helps to think over the style of the game and controls its implementation so that the final result is fully consistent with the idea. The concept artist creates the initial version of the locations, the appearance of the characters, costumes, inventory and other elements. They come into play in the early stages of game development. Illustrators, 3D-artists, animators, FX-artists bring the picture to the final state - they draw and "revive" the world, add special effects.
Their task is to turn all the ideas of the creative team into a full-fledged game and ensure that it works correctly on the right devices. To do this, developers write codes, the engine and user interface, add graphics and sound effects, and also create algorithms that prevent the game from crashing and preventing gamers from enjoying the process.
