Haircut time
More Than Just a Haircut Every month, like clockwork, we set up the shop. Not a real barbershop not the kind with neon signs or waiting chairs. This one’s in our home, in our safe space. It’s just me, my clippers, a cape, and my son Sheamus, sitting tall in the “barber chair” we turn the kitchen stool into. But to him, it’s the real deal. And to me, it’s one of the most meaningful rituals we share. Haircuts haven’t always been easy for Sheamus. Like many autistic kids, he used to struggle wit...

Hi Autismhood Family,
This fall marks the start of a brand new chapter for me and my son, Sheamus and I wanted to share it with you first.
After navigating years of IEP meetings, special ed placements, and trying to make a traditional system fit a beautifully neurodivergent mind, we’ve made the decision to homeschool. But not just any homeschool this will be a parent-led journey rooted in love, respect, and real-world learning.
This is our chance to create a learning environment that reflects who Sheamus is not just what someone else thinks he should be.

📌 What Our Days Will Look Like:
Life Skills:
From making breakfast to sorting laundry and navigating daily routines, Sheamus will be practicing independence through action.
• Math in Motion:
We’ll explore numbers through hands on, visual learning. Think baking, measuring, budgeting, and building.
• Reading + Writing:
Daily tracing of letters, sounding out words, and connecting language with his interests from dinosaurs to anime.
• Arts & Crafts:
Creativity will be front and center. Painting, collage, clay, and storytelling will all be part of his expressive journey.
• Field Trips:
Museums, grocery stores, nature trails, and sensory friendly spots in our community will help us bring lessons to life.
🌍 Why This Matters:
For so many autistic kids like Sheamus, traditional school environments can be overwhelming, limiting, or just not the right fit. By taking the lead at home, I can create space for patience, joy, and authentic learning at his pace. No pressure, no labels just connection.
From One Parent to Another…
If you’re a parent navigating similar choices, know this:
you don’t have to follow the map if it doesn’t serve your child. You can build your own. And you’re not alone.
I’ll be sharing more updates along the way our routines, what’s working (and what isn’t), favorite resources, and honest moments from our homeschool life. I hope it encourages you to trust your gut, protect your child’s peace, and rewrite the rules when you need to.
