Halloween is the time of year when strange faces, bright colors, and things that make folks stop and stare get their own space. So this felt like the right time to share a piece of mine called The wake up.
The image is loud on purpose. A face looks right back at you, surrounded by eyes, color, and a whole lot going on. The story behind the artwork speaks about being called too much, too sensitive, too aware, and about what it means to wake up instead of trying to fit somebody else's idea of normal.
That feeling is familiar to a lot of families living with autism. People see what stands out first. They don't always take time to understand the person underneath it. Sheamus has taught me to slow down and look again. There is always more going on than what somebody sees from across the room.
This piece is part of my art and advocacy work. Take a look at The wake up here: view the artwork on Transient .
