The Problems with Starbucks' NFT Program: An Analysis

"Innovation is not about saying yes to everything. It's about saying NO to all but the most crucial features."

#Starbucks has announced the Starbucks #Odyssey beta program, which allows Starbucks Rewards members to buy and trade limited-edition #NFTs in order to earn rewards and digital badges. While Starbucks claims to be ahead of the curve with this new product that leverages #web3 technology, I argue that it's unclear what problem this initiative is trying to solve for its customers.

One major drawback of the program is that it is essentially a centralized system; a single entity generates the rewards related to its physical products. The company has complete control over the rewards in centralized systems and can select how they are dispersed, who is qualified to get them, and what value they have. As there is no external control or competition to guarantee that the awards are given in a fair and equitable manner, this might lead to possible concerns with fairness and transparency.

Also, why would I want my Starbucks loyalty data made public? I, -like many customers- am concerned about data security.

Additionally, the use of NFTs in a centralized payment system raises questions about the system's long-term viability. Despite being hosted on the Polygon blockchain, these NFTs can be purchased with a credit or debit card, without the need for a crypto wallet. Even though purchasing NFT’s without the need for a wallet is a great improvement on the UX side -which is the soft belly of a lot of web3 projects- the problem of having an intermediary party in the process is still present. This contradicts the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies and may not be sustainable in the long run.

It's important for companies to consider what problem they're trying to solve for their customers before introducing new technologies or initiatives. The concept of Starbucks Odyssey is intriguing, but it lacks the clear, simple value proposition of the successful Starbucks Rewards program.

I realize that this approach is not only convenient for customers, but also helps demystify the concept of blockchain and cryptocurrencies, making them more accessible to a wider audience. I'm all for good news, but again, complicated, centralized payment networks based on "corporate coins" aren't the same as accepting Bitcoin in stores.
