Curious Quests - Game 1

Last week we hosted a 3 day long web3 game. Think of it as a cross between a scavenger hunt and an escape room, all within the lore of an NFT community.

Our hunt was created within the lore of the Forgotten Runes Wizard Cult. We acquired the wizard Ixar, and made a story around his capture that lead in to our game.

Ixar’s Journey

Ixar started to tweet about a dangerous journey he was on. He hinted that he may need help, and the other wizards in the cult took notice. We sought out an up and coming member of the wizard community to get the word out - and ZayLaSoul scheduled a twitter space for Ixar.

Day 1 - Ixar was captured!

Ixar was captured by an evil wizard, and the cult jumped to action.

Listeners flooded the discord and brought their friends. The hunt was on!

They solved a short puzzle and discovered the captor was Ravana, and Ixar was imprisoned by his orb. They were told to gather the next day to start off the real hunt…

Hunters were excited and some started making memes (BOXMOXI)

Day 2 - The hunt continues

The hunt started off with ominous sounds playing from a voice channel in discord, signifying they were coming close to finding Ixar. After a bit of anticipation - a link was dropped!

Rooms were opened and the hunters were off! Each room revealed a one word answer that was a part of the 12 word spell. Each answer could be entered in to the above link, and if it was correct it would take a spot on the page. Scroll to the bottom of this article for a hints section and a section for answers.

The day finished with the hunters hungry for more. They couldn’t wait to free Ixar!

One hunter even streamed himself playing - watch here:

Hunters could barely hold their excitement for the final day, but they had to wait and bring more.

Day 3 - The finale!

The finale kicked off with excitement! Some members of the hunt woke up at 5am just to play. Others had been waiting all day to hop back in to their quest.

Memes were made, and even a video by @NightOwlBirdman on twitter:

The next set of rooms were opened and hunters quickly flew through the puzzles to release ixar - after which there was one last surprise…

The Final Surprise

All puzzles were solved and the final “spell” was found. After entering the words in to the portal, it instructed:

"You have the words, now cast the spell! Take the object if you dare...”

Hold on… 12 words..

The spell is a seed phrase!

Hunters rushed to enter the words in to their wallet of choice and the winner Jin_1551 transferred Ravana’s Orb to himself! After this was verified in discord, he was publicly given a choice….

Jin_1551's fateful decision
Jin_1551's fateful decision

So, Jin_1551 could either take Ixar to himself (an NFT worth >1.6 ETH) or share it (fractionalize) with the other participants. What a decision… and the hunting party had some thoughts:

After 10 nerve racking minutes, Jinn_1551 was given two eth addresses to which he could send the orb, one would destroy it and one would take Ixar.

He chose to be a Hero, and was hailed by the party for his decision.

And members of the hunt couldn’t stop talking about how amazing of a time they had :)

And finally, Ixar was fractionalized and is now shared by all of the participants. Take a look here:

Room 1

There’s a crossword puzzle in the room, along with the hints for across and down in the NFT descriptions of the arrows. There’s also a spellbook in the room written by a character from Harry Potter. The logical leap is that you have to fill out the crossword using Harry Potter Spells.

  • Unlock - “alohomora”

  • Levitate - “wingardium levisa”

  • Kill - “Avada Kedavra”

  • Disarm - “Expelliarmus”

  • Freeze - “Petrificus Totalus”

  • Summon - “accio”

  • Fire - “Incendio”

  • Light - “lumos”

  • Silence - “Silencio”

  • Repair - “Reparo”

  • Amnesia - “Obliviate”

  • Pain - “Crucio”

Finally, you will find another NFT in the ceiling near the book. It’s a set of circles, and you can line it up on top of the crossword to circle a set of letters. The circled letters spell out the answer to the puzzle:

hover

Room 2

You can reverse image search the guy in the room and find out it is Melvil Dewey - the creator of the Dewey Decimal System.

The roman numerals on the wall translate to 577.

Dewey decimal system number 577 is the answer to the puzzle:

ecology

Room 3

The haiku in the corner of the room has 3 lines - each line referencing a shape. Diamond, star, and circle. There’s also an eyeball in the room that references perspective.

The maze has different pairs of emojis tied to letters.

You have to stand on the shapes and look over at the emojis and see which ones you can see - one will be blocked from vision by the pillars or walls.

Doing this for Diamond, Star, and Circle in that order will result in the answer to the puzzle:

minor

Room 4 (2 words)

In the burn mark of one of the pages, you can see the faint markings of a number - 9783039289592

If you google this number - you’ll find a book. Witchcraft, Demonology, and Magic. The full book is free on google books.

If you go to the same pages as the images and find the blue words - you’ll decipher the answers:

old payment

Room 5

Nano - references nanometers - wavelengths of light.

Roman numerals translate to:

  • CCCXC: 390nm = violet

  • DXX: 520nm = green

  • CDXC: 1490nm = blue

  • DCCL: 750nm = red

  • DXLII: 542nm = green

  • DLXX: 570nm = yellow

Use these to pick out the letters of the correct colors and decipher the answer:

insane

Room 6

You’ll find a scroll in this room that asks “what languages do I know?”

There are poems in French, Spanish, Italian, Romanian, and Portugese.

The classification of these languages is the answer:

romance

Room 7

If you reverse image search the bearded wizard hat logo, you’ll find a youtube channel called “carwizard”

in the video, he is pointing to a delorean. You need to look up delorean in the carwizard’s channel. There’s two videos. Only one is more than 632 seconds long.

If you go to that video at 632 seconds, you’ll find the answer:

fuel

Room 8

“I forgot what was their first strength?”. This is referencing the green hat wizards in the forgotten runes wizard cult’s book of lore. Once you find that, you’ll see that the first strength of the green wizards is:

strong

Room 9

The yellow fella in the room is a google street view icon. If you match the colors of the numbers in the room, you end up with the coordinates:

30.2874758, -97.736999

If you go to google maps and enter street view, you’ll see a big sculpture made out of the answer:

canoe

Room 10

The slime asks - what do the properties measure?

If you go to the objects on Opensea, there are properties to each one. You need to map the stars on the object to the properties. For example, the stars on the ruler print out “METRIC”.

There is a tesseract in the room, referencing time, so you should use the clock. The clock’s properties - when deciphered using the numbers the hands point to - spell out AMMETER. An ammeter measures the answer to this puzzle:

current

Room 11

There are floor mats in the room with a maze of letters. On the wall, you see the word “SOYQJ”, with a king to the right and a queen to the left. King = right, Queen = left.

Also on the wall, you see 5 different instructions with kings and queens. These are directions on a map! start at a letter, and follow the corresponding directions. The number is the number of letters to walk forward, king is turning right, queen is turning left. For example - for the first letter you have S and the directions 1♔1♕2♔1. You start on S, walk forward one square, turn right, walk forward one square, turn left, walk forward two squares, turn right, and walk forward one more square. You will end up on the letter “U”, which is the first letter of the answer. Repeat for all five letters to get:

under
