Turkey's central bank completes first CBDC test

The Central Bank of Turkey (CBRT) has conducted the first test of the Turkish digital lira, CoinDesk reported. As part of an initial testing phase, the CBRT successfully completed its first payment transactions on its central bank digital currency (CBDC) network, according to a statement released Thursday. CBRT said that it will continue to conduct small-scale closed-loop application pilot tests with technology partners in the first quarter of next year. The test results will be published in a comprehensive assessment report. In addition, the Turkish digital lira will enter an advanced stage in 2023, and the central bank will conduct pilot tests with the participation of a wide range of banks and fintech companies. The CBRT added that research into the legal aspects of the digital lira showed that digital verification is crucial to the project. Research on the technical requirements as well as the economic and legal framework for a digital lira will therefore be prioritized next year.
