F. M. Dostoevsky. Demons

"Demons" is one of the most famous novels by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, written by him in 1871. This work covers many topics, the main among which are religion, philosophy and politics. But the main theme of the book is showing how easy it is to lose yourself and your ideals, as well as what the outcome of such changes may be.

The novel describes the spiritual crisis of Russian society in the 1860s. The main character Ivan Petrovich, a former progressive thinker and revolutionary, comes to his hometown at the invitation of his friend Nikolai Stavrogin, an accomplished and rich man. In the course of the narrative Petrovich and Stavrogin encounter various personalities, including representatives of political, religious and philosophical trends of that time, and go through their own spiritual crisis.

The central figure of the novel becomes Shatov – a man who adheres to utopian ideas and ideals, a fighter for social justice, a convinced believer. He opposes new ideologies and religions, but at the same time dies at the hands of a convert to the secret society Kirsanov, one of the representatives of the revolutionary movement. This situation symbolizes the conflict between traditional Russia and new ideas that are ready to refute traditional values.

The main theme of the novel is not ideas or political struggles, but the spiritual state of a person. Dostoevsky shows what changes happen to people when they begin to live not in accordance with their ideals and ideas, but under the dictation of the social environment and public expectations. An attempt to make sure that everything is easy, that there are no lines between good and evil – all these are delusions to which heroes become susceptible.

There are a lot of philosophical arguments in the novel, but they take place in the foreground, uniting all the storylines around them. As in many of Dostoevsky's works, much attention is paid here to various religious doctrines and the characters' views on the true faith. The novel also contains many quotations from the Bible and other sacred texts that set the main characters in action.

"Demons" is a novel that makes the necessary adjustments to modern political and cultural life. The appeal of the book is
