The sidewalk moves backwards underneath me. I wish it’d slow down a bit.
As soon as I see that pepper tree again, the one with seasonal red pepper berries pulling the branches to my fingertips, I get ready to jump over the deep black hole. It’s a quick leap, just long enough to see little lights inside.
Digging my heels into the ground, I try to slow down the sidewalk. Leaping over the hole, I yell STOP. Above the hole, I can’t reach the sidewalk.
The hole moves up and I’m just floating inside everything. Bring me Lahaina, with Mark Twain, smoking a pipe. We’re talking about nothing.
