This anecdote is often overlooked, yet vital in web3 communities.
The acts of observing, contributing and participating are fundamentally separate acts with different desired outcomes. If we don’t create the appropriate context for these acts to be performed, the fundamental structure we build the community and culture on will be unaligned.
Unaligned foundations never stood the test of time.
This unalignment happens because if we do not present a desired action to a human within a context that they have the energy to understand, feel safe in, and can navigate - they will shut down.
For instance, if you have ever visited a developing country and walked through a dodgy flea market, you’ll know the feeling well. What they are selling does seem interesting, but you feel like if you even slow down for a second, you’re going to get baited into buying something you don’t want. So you ignore the booth, and keep walking.
The same thing happens in web3 communities. A person with the intention to observe is placed in a context where it seems like the expectation is to participate or contribute. Sprinkle in a few spammy DMs from malicious parties, the confusion of a discord server and voilà - we are at the flee market again.
It’s important to create the right context for potential members to feel safe, and communicate appropriate actions so that the community can flourish.
