This summer, I was struggling with the pile of CADs and architectural models for an architecture design Institution. It was an ordinary day when I happened to be listening to "Work, but not go to Work - What can Web3 bring us", an informative podcast episode I stumbled across. I have to say that I completely gravitated toward the title immensely intrigued. As a person who was suffering from repeated monotonous commuting, I thought, “WOW, we’re living in a technological era that allows me to ‘Work, but not go to Work’. I think I’ve found the ultimate solution in my life!”
The unintentional episode helped me open a new portal: Web3. Amongst those magnificent concepts, there is no doubt that I’m attracted by it - I’m passionate about Web3’s concept of a worldview of decentralization and omitting excessive monopoly, and having an equal world structure, where creators could get more rights that are rightfully entitled to them. I like the version of the world described by Web3. On the other hand, I’m afraid that I just fall into the grand narrative of a newly found innovation.
Since then, I’ve read a lot of reports and articles related to to Web3’s philosophy. They explained it from various perspectives such as technology, business, capital, and the future’s advancement. I understand some of their notions, while still feeling confused about part of them. As an ordinary person in a non-technological field, I try to understand it from a personal perspective: What possibilities can Web3 bring to us ordinary people? Is there a new production relationship? Will there be the possibility of a new way of making a living? What is the next step in this digital space?
I suddenly realized that when I deliberate about “the future”, it registers that I have never thought of “now”. I never thought about the changes in this world of networking and digitalization because I am a generation who grow up in the digital age, and I was born in a digital change.
And now a new wave emerges, when most people notice it, are we also in it?
Our technology has always focused on the application of centralized design. The time to enter the completely algorithm-level decentralized application is very short. But we have already conjured up a lot of interesting things within various chains. Bitcoin has become a new currency and broke the restrictions on national borders and time; so many decentralized financial scenarios also appeared...... Blockchain, smart contracts, and cryptography have greatly opened our imaginations. Keep in mind that these technologies have just begun. There may be a lot of things we can't contemplate. What else will happen? Maybe we just can't imagine.
So, I want to keep an open mind to observe or participate in any new things. I decided to learn it, participate in it, and avoid passively entering a new era. I’m looking forward to seeing more magic.
Sometimes I recall my naive thoughts on that ordinary summer day - I thought I’ve found the ultimate solution to my life. Now I know Web3 is not the ultimate solution to my life, nor is it the ultimate solution to the world.
Perhaps the ultimate solution is to stay open and observe.
In the face of graduation, in the face of future career choices, and in the face of future technological changes, I want to continue to be open and observe. I think of what my professor told me: the only thing constant in this world is change. People should embrace the changes of the unknown world.
(So much thanks to my English teacher Dessy and Kimi's modification suggestions!)
