What is Zuck thinking?

With the earnings report in freefall many are asking what exactly is in Mark Zuckerberg’s mind.

The two main failures seem to be that 1) facebook sucks and 2) all benefits are going into this crazy project called Meta.

So what is the metaverse? It is a combination between virtual reality and blockchain. A sort of traceable virtual reality that can build and evolve and register things.

Why do we hate the metaverse?

I think here the thing it we are evaluating something in it’s infancy and also it is possible that human brains cannot build a universe as rich or alive as the “real” analog one.

Ok, so what is Zuck thinking?

Recently I spent some time in the fantastic metaverse course at unic by punk5129 and I can see some of the appeal. If we could do something like websites but more dynamic and interesting it would be great. I still think it’s hard to beat the convenience of a website (for a while I was lost in the metaverse, not a fun experience, when it would have been much simpler to just go where I wanted - a lecture- instead of roaming fields of grass). That said, if there could be a unified metaverse where people could build up their region of it, that would look interesting.

The second part I think has to do with the initial appeal of Facebook, two sides in my opinion. 1) Groups are there, people who follow a bar or a skateboard community or fountain pen enthusiasts and 2) the power of nostalgia, everyone has facebook, it’s the easiest way of finding high school friends or that random person from summer camp ‘96.

If Facebook could recreate these spaces through the metaverse, these groups would be amazing. Discussing the latest cocktail change in a dimly lit bar sounds fun. Similar situation if you could visit a recreation of the school (plus, it could be of the school the year you attended, not whatever it is now), that would also give a boost to the nostalgia Facebook is known for.

These are my thoughts. Hope you enjoyed :)
