Promised Land : Book Review Chapter 4

This was one of the best chapters in the book (at least until now), but I’m really happy that I started listening this book on Audible (trust me the audiobook is much better as Mr. Obama himself is the narrator and his deep baritone voice is captivating enough to get hooked)

So after my 6th semester exams were finished, I had a window of at least 3-5 weeks (I was supposed to do internship but LOL that’s a different story). So to be productive one of the things I started was listening to a book which was the most prominent in my to-read lists : A Promised Land ~ Barack Obama.

Chapter - 4

A chapter which can be seen as setting a pace for what’s coming (optional : if you’re a Non American, pls watch the Series House of Cards before Reading/ Listening to this book, so that you can understand the American political jargons)

Although the previous chapters were slow and little confusing but they were necessary in establishing the scene, the life and the family dynamics of Barack Obama, the earlier chapter gave a little insight on the backstory and the thought process along with the introduction of how the personal life (meeting Michelle and winning senate seat) came along.

  • This chapter gave an insight on how BO (short for Barack Obama) started thinking about running for Presidency.

  • How he travelled to Africa to connect with the father’s side of the family and to introduce his daughters, Sasha and Malia to his Family.

  • How he sought political advice from stalwarts at the capitol, and forged friendships and alliances.

  • His constant effort to bring together a energetic, young and vibrant staff.

  • The struggle with his and his team’s ambivalence (I related so much with this section)

  • This chapter also puts light on how BO resolved differences and confrontations with MO (Michelle Obama)

  • The last dialogue is literally a set epitome for young couples on how to solve interpersonal issues through effective communication
