Some years ago I worked in fine dining. I was the dishwasher. This was a hard time in my life because I was homeless and living out of my car. It’s one of those type of things that you don’t share publicly.

The other day I told Charlie about my new job idea; dishwashing. From Microsoft to Flix Brewhouse, it’s quite a drop. Who cares? “Achievement Unlocked.”

Anyway…. She did not take the idea lightly and said I need to get my shit together. That’s the thing though, I am getting my shit together. I’m building mental grit. It was difficult for me to wash dishes back then because I was ashamed of myself.

This restaurant did not have automated dishwasher as so they were done by hand. My hands, my hand doing proof of work. There’s something about doing proof of work, it changes your perspective in the kitchen. It hurt to throw away half eaten steaks and lobster tails.

But my stomach hurt more.
