The basic basis for an auctioneer is a certain sensitivity to numbers, such as the ability to deal with bidding ladder, reserve price, written commission bidding and other bidding methods; Speak clearly and coherently, preferably in different languages, and serve different customers in different regions. At the same time, auctioneers need to maintain a resourceful attitude and the ability to think independently under extreme pressure, because when you are on the auction block, anything can happen, auctioneers need to remain calm and control the pace of the auction. It takes more than that to be a good auctioneer. At certain critical moments, a successful auctioneer is also a good salesman, encouraging clients to keep bidding. In addition, experienced auctioneers are good at managing the pace of an auction -- too fast, you may ignore the client's bid; If the pace is too slow, customers will lose their ability to sustain and pay attention to the auction. Auction is also a performance, auctioneers need to have a certain personality charm, know how to attract the audience. People who work at auction houses wear many hats. It can be hard to define a typical day at work. Auction houses typically work on a six-month cycle. Christie's auctions are divided into the spring sale, which takes place in late May, and the fall sale, which takes place in late November. In the case of spring auctions, we solicit lots within three months of the end of the last auction season, which is between December and February. During this period, we will not only assist the auction house to find suitable lots, but also negotiate with different collectors, art dealers and antiques to receive the items. We will also be responsible for the appraisal, selection of lots, planning and other work. In March and April, we spend about six weeks working on the auction catalogue. During this time, we had to take measurements, photograph and write catalogs and other related work. In this process, we will conduct background research on the artworks, understand the source of the lots, improve the quality report and so on. From mid-April to May, after the auction catalogue is completed, we will work with various media to promote the new season's lots and promote them to the community through press releases. We also tour around the world and hold different kinds of events, lectures, cocktail parties and dinners to deepen new collectors' understanding of Christie's and to gain their attention. In the last week of May, which is our auction week, we have a preview at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. We will spend two to three days on site installation, and we will display about 400 works of art in the modern and contemporary art category alone. Then, we invite collectors from all over the world to see our preview. Although many collectors have received catalogs and messages sent by us before the exhibition, nothing is more exciting than letting them, who love art, come to the preview site and feel the charm of artworks in person. On the morning of the auction, our team meets to discuss each item, to communicate which items are the most popular and what needs to be followed up. After that, we will start contacting the customer to confirm the bid and other paperwork. Since the night auctions run late, it's physically demanding for the auctioneer, so I try to go home and take a nap. As for the preparation work, I will prepare my notes in advance and write down which artists' auction records we are likely to break, so that we can announce these data at the auction site. At the same time, I have to allow enough time to do my makeup. Once everything is in order, we organize a "final auctioneer meeting" to make sure all the details have been worked out. After that, the auction was officially opened. After the auction, we will arrange press releases and publicity, and will also communicate with the lucky buyer and handle the payment, shipping and binding issues. All this work is repeated every auction season.
