CommonValue uses the power of Web3 to foster development projects as sustainable communities, rewarding their members, incentivizing their participation, and creating shared ownership.
Many of the most exciting new technologies today are being developed as open-source projects. Anyone, anywhere, can join and take part in their development process. Contributors can review the code, find bugs, suggest new features, and more. In the process, they will feel a part of a larger community, build their reputation, and learn new skills.
However, while being open to the public, most projects are still being developed in a centralized way by a core team. External contributors can take part, of course, but projects lack the infrastructure for recognizing diverse types of contributions, creating a sense of inclusion for developers, and incentivizing them for the long run.
In particular, projects are lacking a suitable “contractual” infrastructure. While traditional organizations rely on employment contracts to recognize work, collaborative projects are missing the tools that would allow them to go beyond pro-bono contributions.
Web3 encompasses new possibilities to solve these needs. It will transform the way we share value, as the internet changed the way we share information. Powered by blockchain tech, tokens, and smart contracts, Web3 enables projects to thrive in a more sustainable and fairer way.
We believe that Web3 solutions should be accessible to users on the platforms they are already using. These tools have crossed the chasm and perfected their user experience to allow communities to engage and prosper. Offering Web3 features on top of existing experiences is the road to accelerating its mass adoption.
More than 30 million developers are using GitHub on a monthly basis. They are pushing their code, creating issues, commenting, suggesting, and receiving a variety of reactions from their community, from likes to hearts to bonfires.
We created CommonValue as an engine that allows communities to easily distribute web3 rewards based on these rich interactions. Thus, unlocking new opportunities for them to recognize their members' work and participation.
We built the platform with the following principle in mind: different communities have different needs, values, and goals. For this reason, CommonValue is designed to let them create their own rules for how Github interactions will result in rewards and recognition.
Our first type of rule allows communities to create a campaign, fund it with tokens and reward them to contributors who merge pull-requests on specific repositories, based on their received reactions. Each campaign is an independent wallet that can receive any ERC-20 and native tokens which will be distributed according to the reward rules associated with it.
Pull-requests weighted by reactions are converted into shares of the campaign, and the tokens can then flow to contributors based on these shares. The tokens will await contributors in the campaign smart contract until they will connect and claim them. No need for them to go through a complicated onboarding process.
Contributing and being rewarded is now as simple as merging pull-requests and reacting. Everything else just works.
Take the example of a project that is consolidated, has funds, and wishes to actively engage with its community of external contributors. CommonValue campaigns can be used to incentivize these contributors to work together, learn from each other, and make meaningful contributions to the project. All of this while receiving tangible rewards and on top of the existing GitHub workflow of the project.

We are currently launching CommonValue as a private beta, but you can already explore the app and browse existing campaigns at commonvalue.xyz.
We are also testing different use cases. Among those is retroactive funding, helping open-source communities to transition to DAOs, decentralized collaborative hackathons, and more.
If you are interested in getting involved in the beta, please join our telegram. We would love to hear from you and learn more about your community and what motivates you. Together, we can build the next collaborative chapter of the web.
