In our last post, we scratched the surface on what it means to be active in web3. 🏋️♀️ Now, it’s time to dig a little deeper. ⚒ The NFT (non fungible token) market is exploding, with $17.7 billion reported in sales for 2021. To yield that $17b amount, upwards of 30,000 NFTs are reportedly sold monthly. This figure does not include NFTs that were minted and remain unsold. Let’s not even get into the amount of time spent writing smart contracts, building new apps, and building community in the space. Of all the hours spent in front of a computer screen, how many are spent doing physical activity? An educated guess would be: ZERO. ⭕️
For years, the standard for adult physical activity, according to the CDC, has been a MINIMUM of 30 minutes of physical activity per day. According to statistics displaying: Participation in leisure-time aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities that meet the federal 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans among adults aged 18 and over, by selected characteristics: United States, selected years 1998–2018, Only 24% of adults meet the mark. Building in web3 is a largely sedentary experience and with or without a prior exercise regimen, managing demands of this space along with the demands from your health, may seem impossible.
SO HOW DO WE STAY HEALTHY AND KEEP CREATING THE FUTURE?🤔
Balance + Prioritization are the keys to implementing healthy habits into daily web3 schedules. Odds are, you’re in the space, have hit your stride, or are struggling to find it, and you’re devoting pretty much every spare moment to building. This imbalanced lifestyle, leaves little room for physical exercise to become a habit. As one of the keys to proper “Work/Life balance”, prioritization is responsible for why we do what we do and when we do it. When we examine prioritization in this context, it requires assigning a value to a task, in reference to other associated tasks in this scenario. With that, physical activity would likely need to be incentivized in order to be a high priority in your routine.
By utilizing the very communities we are building in web3, we have a chance to build a fitness infrastructure that incentivizes users in the space by tracking their real-life physical activity. Aside from the obvious benefits of working out like increased energy, productivity, and mood, along with better sleep and body functions, web3 allows us to uniquely incentivize activity in the space. From IRL events to proof-of-workout models, the space is taking heed to the importance of fitness in web3. Companies are combining the social signaling that comes with collecting NFTs like unique sneaker designs with these models to create a more transformative experience than available in web2. There are also NFT fitness membership platforms offering exclusive benefits to holders, playing very heavily on the aspect of social signaling that exists as the bane of many NFT collectors’ existence.
Make no mistake, IRL events incorporating web3 technology offer a unique yet familiar opportunity for users to engage in the space. At our first W|Field Day event, we’re creating an IRL fitness experience that allows users to claim a token for participating in the fitness sessions at the event. This model allows triple-incentivization (we made that up) as users will receive a special token via POAP (Proof-of-attendance-protocol), an IRL workout, and networking opportunities that can build and yield web3 relationships and partnerships beyond the mics of Twitter Spaces.
As new users continue to enter web3, the importance of maintaining active habits will increase, opening new doors for forward-thinking fitness companies to create NFT projects promoting fitness and associated industries, creating a health and wellness ecosystem, reminiscent of that in web2. Before you know it, we’ll all be shuffling to our metaverse gyms to show off our sparkling NFT guns. 💪
