From static JPGs to composable and creatively extendable media. In the past 6 months, CyberFrens underwent fundamental changes in regards to its value proposition, project setup and creative process.
Initially the project was positioned as a classic “PFP collectible” project with an angle to integrate with DEFI protocols and various metaverses.
A guiding question for us was, and still is, what immersive meta spaces hold in store for having fun, playing games and exploring new ways to connect.
With that question in mind, we went to Buildquest, an ETHglobal hackathon focused on exploring the capabilities of the so-called “metaverse”.
The first generation of NFTs were immutable. This feature, although sensical in some cases, is a bugging limitation in others. Flexing our exponential thinking cap, we wondered what NFTs would be in a metaworld where identities and contexts change at cyberspeed.
Fast forward to the Hackathon we ideate for 2 days and end up being overly fascinated with the concept of composability for digital items. NFTs are a perfectly suited technology to enable traceable re-combination of digital assets. In the current state, each NFT is composed of a handful of traits, but each trait is not represented as its own asset. The combination of traits is only manifested in the form of metadata and a visual output linked to an NFT.
With CyberFrens, each trait will be represented as its own token, each with varying degrees of uniqueness: some are fungible, others unique.
This enables three things:
owners can assemble their avatar in every combinatory possibility with traits they own.
traits are tradable and your inventory expandable.
additional items like new skins, accessories or game items can be added along the way. Creativity is the only limitation.

Let’s take a CyberFren as an example. The CF Golden Armour is pretty cool, but what if a legendary crypto artist like xCopy created their own super limited trait, the xCopy armour?
With composability, no problem. Anybody could create new traits for an existing collection as long as visual guidelines are respected. (dimensions, style)
Collections are not static anymore, but dynamic and infinitely extensible.
This paves the path for collaborations with artists, but also community-driven trait creation. The finances are also aligned with this innovation, collection creators get a share of the revenue.
What if you could not only update the looks of your PFP but also your 3D Sandbox or 2D Pixel avatar in WWWEBB? This requires us to integrate with existing standards and nail the intricacies of 3D modelling. What is explorative ground, for now, shall become reality in the future. As the multiverse is growing rapidly, so should the portability of your digital identity!
