- the movement towards nature
Solarpunk is made of two words. Solar (relating to the sun) and punk.
In astrology, the sun represents energy of giving, optimism, well-being, happiness and our true authentic expression and mission. In contrast to the sun, the moon represents energy of receiving, our ego, mind-programming and habitual patterns coming from our families, societies, and other influences, which form our character and also our subconscious mind and intuition. This moon energy (as a mere reflection of the real light) needs to be overcome to understand our true potential.
Similarly, the word punk means personal and unique expression of our authentic selves in touch with our true human nature. It is a movement that serves to disregard social standards, attitudes, prescriptions, or programs that are rooted in human ignorance of the reality. Punk strives to look for understanding of how things truly are, not how they are portraited by ideologies, theories, societies, institutions, or other systems.
Combining the two above words together, solarpunks can be defined as optimistic societal and technological hackers, architects and doers who understand that the only way forward is creating a world, which is generative and regenerative at its core and aligned with the inner nature and knowing of human beings and the outer nature and designs of our ecosystems and the planet. It is based on values and principles of post-scarcity, post-hierarchy, post-capitalism, and post-consumerism, where humanity sees itself as part of nature.
There is no single right way to do solarpunk. Instead, diverse communities, organizations, tribes, or clubs from around the world adopt the name and the ideas and build little nests of self-sustaining revolution. All of this is original and authentic, taking into account local specifics. Solarpunk emphasizes environmental sustainability, self-sufficiency, living within natural limits, diversity, equality, ingenuity, and social justice. Solarpunk is about youth maker culture, local solutions, local energy grids, ways of creating autonomous functioning systems. It strives for communal unity in the form of collaboration, to actualize relatedness, connection and common purpose. The understanding is that personal happiness is directly connected to the happiness of others. It is about loving the world.

In their minds and through their actions and solutions, solarpunks are building a bright future of decentralized autonomous communities and systems which build on the core values of transparency and trust. In essence, solarpunk is a movement where new social and technology designs mimic the nature. They understand that spirituality and science eventually come to the same conclusions. Solarpunk culture includes all cultures, religions, abilities, sexes, genders and sexual identities.
The solarpunk movement is a new phase of development of the society. Similarly to our personal development, certain challenges that are created by wrong understanding of how things truly are need to be overcome. These misunderstandings create patterns, habits, and behaviours, which can be in direct opposition to the successful development outcomes. And so, the vision and dream of solarpunks need to be protected from these. The danger solarpunks can face is naivety in thinking that nothing can go wrong and eventual corruption by the current systems and matrixes.
Solarpunks must make sure they are using their energy correctly and carefully, when realizing their visions. This is done through setting up of the right boundaries. The correct development of any individual, society or system needs to be twofold. First, it needs to give energy to create by way of following and nurturing the inner authentic nature and truth. And second, it needs to receive energy (or be able to keep energy to oneself) to protect itself from the outer negative influences. These two basic approaches need to be merged for any development to be successful.
We can take an example in the online world of solarpunk, which is the internet in its latest phase, called the web3. It is a space of decentralization, autonomy and self-sufficient online communities (called DAOs), which adhere to all, or at least most of the above solarpunk principles. It is a place where the online space is a free resource, and where to every individual is given the power to control and own its data and to transfer value.
However, as we know, there are also powers in this world which push for surveillance and misuse of personal information and data in the online environment. This is where the protective approach and setting up of firm boundaries must come in place. In this digital world analogy, this is called lunarpunk (relating to the moon).

Lunarpunks are technological geeks who aim to protect individuals and organizations through digital privacy enhancing tools, which provide space for self-determination and autonomy. Lunarpunks are energy protectors. Their purpose is to set boundaries against unwanted influences of the threatening “big brother” society. They strive for self-sufficiency, self-definition, autonomy, and freedom of decision-making. The downside of lunarpunk, if taken into extreme, can be that it may become aggressive, pessimistic, or isolative. In constant war with the current adverse systems. Nevertheless, the right boundaries are never walls of isolation or disconnection, but rather simply self-confident ability to express what is acceptable and what is not. This is inner integrity.
Supporters of the solarpunk vision are here to find the ways and solutions to build decentralized autonomous generative and regenerative projects that are in line with nature, both in the real and the online world. Through this work they will also develop new resistant individuals, societies, and systems. But they should not be naïve and understand that they also need to protect themselves and their dreams. Therefore, solarpunk and lunarpunk must come hand in hand and be merged into unity. The two approaches of nurturing and giving, and protection and receiving, must become one. Only then the balance will come, and the magic of natural, healthy and happy ways of living and being will happen.
