Arweave is a protocol that allows you to store data permanently and pay a single upfront fee. This core structure of permanent storage grew into the permaweb: A permanent web of pages and applications that live forever on the protocol. In time the permaweb has grown from small beginnings to becoming the most reliable decentralized storage method used in web3. This fact is largely due to its pure decentralized structure. Arweave has a unique approach where decentralization isn’t just a goal or ethos, but is actually core to the functions of the protocol. On the weave, data is fully copied across each of the miners that operate the weave network. This ensures that no single point of failure affects the data reliability and permanence, solidifying real decentralization as a core function of the networks data storage operations. With this type of built-in guarantee of decentralized data permanence, the ecosystem has grown tremendously as builders recognize the power of it’s reliability for many use cases and dApp designs.
This type of exponential growth comes -in no small part- from a strong community foundation of builders, and the guidance of leaders like Sam Williams - the founder of Arweave. Sam has steadfastly lead the Arweave community with a vision of the decentralized permaweb where all pages and data are permanent and history is preserved regardless of the victors. On his profile at sam.arweave.dev(an ArNS name), Sam wrote ”We believe that free speech and expression is a foundational component of any just society -- just as much in cyberspace as in physical space.” A noteworthy aspect of his leadership style is uplifting others with regular shout-outs and recognition to the amazing builders who have tirelessly worked together to create the Arweave protocol and permaweb ecosystem.
In the air of giving credit, I want to introduce you - the reader and user in web3 - to some amazing decentralized products being built by truly visionary teams that utilize the potential and capabilities of Arweave. Some of these I use in day-to-day tasks and think you might want to try them yourself!

The ar.io Team has developed and continues to build many great protocols and products that help users interact with and use the permaweb like Ardrive and ArNs. Ardrive enables users to upload their files to Arweave using any browser. This app simplifies these uploads with an interface that allows users to create a profile and drives to store data in. This means the average user can upload any file to the permaweb easily without using a CLI. With their recent app release on the Google Play Store, now anyone with an Android device can upload data to the permaweb on-the-go. With the easy to-use UI, myself and others utilize Ardrive as the standard choice for permanent file storage on Arweave. Anything that is important to save like personal files, photos, and even DAO proposals can be uploaded permanently, quickly, and easily. Another great protocol they have developed is ArNS - Arweave Name System. ArNS is the DNS protocol for Arweave, and allows users to create subdomain names for pages and data uploaded on the permaweb so they can be more easily found. For example, you can access the Ardrive website at ardrive.arweave.dev, which is a permaweb hosted page and domain! This means that the data for this site will always be there for future viewers to access. Technology like this brings much needed accessibility standards and an improved user experience for anyone accessing the permaweb.

The Sarcophagus Dead Man’s Switch is a dapp designed for recovery and/or passdown of important data. This dapp stores encrypted files permanently on Arweave, then sets a Dead Man’s Switch that triggers the data’s decryption mechanisms and release to the designated recipient once it expires. This utility can be used in many ways, and brings a decentralized approach to passing down vital credentials to heirs, or recovering lost credentials and passwords. Anything from important messages or instructions, or even critical pieces of journalism or political evidence can be securely stored with an assurance that its retrieved by the intended party in any given circumstance where the user fails to give the intended interaction. One creative use case story told by @offdeblockchain, an attendee at the Jekyll Island meeting in January 2022, was the concept of safeguarding the CocaCola secret recipe. ”According to the CocaCola company, only two employees are privy to the complete formula at any given time and they are not permitted to travel together.” - Wikipedia. In this idea he said “If 2 people know the recipe, what happens if 1 person dies in a plane crash? They could set a dead mans switch with the information safely encrypted. Then if something happens and they do not prove liveness at some point, the recipe is securely passed to an heir without any third party being able to ever see the recipe.” This scenario is creative, and gives a relatable example of how this decentralized technology can solve many situations where important data or information is on the line.
Recently Sarcophagus fired up it’s testnet with the mainnet launch approaching soon! Excitement is mounting in the community and building is happening at every level to get everything prepared.

The Permaswap Network is a fully transparent, decentralized peer-to-peer DEX network built on Arweave and everPay protocols. With their recent completion of the second Permaswap DEX testnet run, they are looking to launch the first DEX on Arweave and usher in the next phase of trustless swaps to the ecosystem. This DEX will have features like multi-chain swaps, and no slippage to stop front-running and bots. This utility will further expand the potential and use within the Arweave ecosystem and beyond by giving a decentralized alternative to using centralized services for swapping AR, ETH and other tokens.

The web is full of broken links, and this is never more painful than when the link leads to an article you spent time laboriously researching and editing. Mirror stores all of the articles on its platform on Arweave, so even if the platform ceased to exist, the writings of the countless users will forever live on the weave. This kind of historical record of the writings from many different individual perspectives will grant a reliable glimpse into the past for future generations to come.

Bundlr is a multi-chain data network that acts as a scaling solution for storage on Arweave. It is easily integrated with other apps or protocols, and allows payment for data storage in a variety of different cryptocurrencies. Bundlr allows users to upload data to the weave in under 20ms and can scale to infinite transactions per second. A fantastic example of this solution in use is the Sarcophagus V2 protocol. The V2 protocol uses Bundlr for all of it’s data storage uploads to Arweave. For Sarcophagus, it provides a reliable and fast data upload with broader options for how the fees are paid, improving the overall data handling and user experience alike for the dApp. Solutions like Bundlr provide the much needed tools that other builders can use to more easily create the next generation of dApps utilizing Arweave.

One of the most exciting announcements recently is the use of Arweave by Meta for Instagram accounts. Meta will use Arweave to permanently store digital collectibles (NFTs) from creators on Instagram. This will undoubtedly sustain a large growth trajectory for the Arweave Network from being integrated with such a widely used platform. Instagram could introduce the more than 2 billion active users on its platform to the solutions provided by the permaweb. This is no small feet in the road to broader mass adoption.
In the quickly growing world of web3, Arweave and the ecosystem that exists on the permaweb has become a cornerstone in ways to store different types of data. There are myriads of other incredible applications being researched and built by teams that I haven’t mentioned here, and I think everyone should explore this growing ecosystem more. The collective works of solid leadership, a strong builder-centric community, and a fundamentally sound concept to build upon has made Arweave part of history- permanently.
