Microsoft edge browser built-in VPN function

DoNews, May 2 (Liu Wenxuan) apple began to launch a VPN service called “private relay” in MacOS Monterey and IOS / ipados 15. In contrast, as a developer of windows system, Microsoft also launched similar services in its own browser to ensure users’ Internet security.

This service is completed by Microsoft in cooperation with cloudflare, called “Microsoft edge secure network”, which claims to ensure that the data sent through the edge is transmitted through the encrypted channel, even if the user visits a less secure website using HTTP.

After this service is enabled, online activities and web page data can be protected, which can prevent operators or hackers from knowing which websites, user locations or IP addresses users have visited, or eavesdropping on information transmitted through web pages, such as account passwords, on public Wi Fi networks. After logging into edge with a Microsoft account, users can use 1GB of data transmission per month for free.

This service combines cloudflare infrastructure to provide this service. The latter acts as Microsoft’s data sub processor to collect a small part of diagnostic and support information about http / HTTPS calls to observe the source, destination IP, transmission port, timestamp and access token provided by edge. Cloudflare will permanently delete these data every 25 hours.

In cooperation with Microsoft, cloudflare will not transfer, authorize or sell edge user data to anyone or organization, nor will it establish user files by recording data online or integrating cloudflare and other unit data.

To use Microsoft edge secure network, users must have a Microsoft account and log in. Microsoft will collect the bandwidth usage of edge secure network services every month and send a reminder before the quota is used up.

In addition to Microsoft edge, other browsers also provide similar functions, including Chrome’s built-in VPN service that supports L2TP over IPSec. Mozilla has also partnered with proton VPN to provide paid VPN services for Firefox browser users, supporting five devices for $4.99 a month.
