When a group of creators gathered online after the release of the short film Elena in the Film3 universe, none of them imagined that what began as an impromptu creative exchange would turn into one of the most active writing collectives in Latin America.
"The spark of Coders Room emerged very organically," said Luis Vanegas, co-founder of The Coders Room. "We didn't plan to create a writers' room from the start; we simply found ourselves needing to create together."
That instinct to build, teach, and make stories together is the heart of The Coders Room. A collective of writers, filmmakers, and dreamers redefining what storytelling looks like in Web3.
Luis Vanegas and The Coders Room team told us all about it.
At first, there were only two: Steve Deery (Pondweed) and Luis Vanegas. But ideas attract people, especially those steeped in authenticity.
Through X open calls and Film3 threads, the group expanded, welcoming in Julian Flores, Madeline Marlowe, Jeremy Taylor, Danny One, Will Fox, and Carlos Vanegas.
"The Coders Room team is a mosaic of passionate personalities. We meet weekly to brainstorm, argue, and keep the vision alive. What unites us isn't the market, it's our passion for storytelling."
Beyond the core group, The Coders Room thrives on its community: writers, cinephiles, first-timers who bring constant new energy to the room.
Before the Arts3 Web3 Startup Award, Coders Room was pure creativity, and almost no resources.
"We were creating with almost nothing. When we saw the DCP call for Web3 collectives, we knew it was our chance. Coders Room was a perfect fit: a project born and thriving in Web3 with a strong audiovisual vision.
Winning the award was a milestone. It allowed us to stop constantly chasing resources and focus on creating.
Now, the award enables us to dream bigger and more ambitiously, fueling our creativity without limits."
With that freedom came momentum. Their six-episode metaphysical horror series Bébeme (Drink Me), written by Julian Flores, Steve Deery, and Luis Vanegas, is now in post-production and set to premiere next year on DCP+.
They're also developing La Residencia, led by Madeline Marlow, a poetic horror series that doubles as a writing lab, "like a school for Coders Room members."
Their web series El Círculo, written by several Coders Room members, premiered on Youtube and went on to win the India Catalina Award.
Today, The Coders Room has become more than a writers' room. It's a creative hub where anyone can walk in with an idea, and potentially walk out with a story in motion.
"The A3 Award didn't just give us resources, it gave us peace of mind and the space to focus entirely on creativity and production."
This industry has its fair share of trials and tribulations, at its core a simple reality: as Luis said, "not every story makes it to the screen, no matter how much we want it."
Instead of slowing them down, those limitations sharpened their process. In the space between limitations and ambitions, The Coders Room learned how to adapt. They write for what they have, make creativity their currency, and ensure every member, no matter how new, has a place in the process.
That flexibility has become their philosophy: even with minimal resources, stories can thrive when a community refuses to stop dreaming.
The Coders Room wasn't built to chase scale. It was built to tell stories.
"My dream is for The Coders Room to remain a boutique group of creatives that can produce large-scale series and feature films with global recognition, sharing the stories we want to tell the world."
It's projects like these that inspires us to keep going, to find new ways to push creators like the minds behind The Coders Room to grow.
What Luis, Steve, Madeline, and the rest of The Coders Room creatives have done is a testament to the fact that where there's a will, there's a way... and maybe we can help.
