“Great collaboration feels like playing Jazz” - Ray Dalio, Bridgewater Associates
Artificial intelligence can be designed to create virtual consciousness, with capabilities that allow for the digital handling of tasks. A world where back office and legal counsel are replaced by computers and cloud servers is already here. One could say that the entire landscape of traditional finance is on its way to being replaced. Imagine AI finalizing settlements and remittances, surgeons with impeccable accuracy and sensors for eyes, and the aggregation of that information being stored in a knowledge base of other AI agents tuned and coded to guardrails that ensure quality control and insurance.
AI represents a future where risk in decision making can be mitigated through hard code and recursive code, and autonomy among agents is built towards useful value propositions. As we see it now, agents can be influencers, gathering the insight of a collective and creating intelligent, quasi-sentient understanding. A renaissance in technology has emerged, and artificial intelligence is primed to transcend and innovate traditional business models across all industries.
Speaking of a renaissance - Jazz music was born out of a groundbreaking artistic renaissance in America, flourishing in the face of political and social adversity - the Harlem Renaissance. A global movement, Jazz was a name given by critics to an art form which redefined social, cultural and artistic standards around the world, expanding and innovating the compositions and theoretical components of the lexicon of music composed by centuries of great composers like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Ravel. Jazz fused the rhythms of colonial marches with dances from American communities, starting in New Orleans.
The builders of the decentralized Web3 ecosystem are the torchbearers in the wake of a new era of prohibition, similar to the Prohibition of 1917. This time, protocols, tokens and NFTs that build communities and reveal the horizons of an inevitable future are the new alcohol and speakeasy, with stringent policy revolving around the definition of securities “halting” events that signal mass adoption and institutional integration. With mainstream media as a catalyst to promote fear and uncertainty around the premise of the blockchain, one on the sophisticated end of the spectrum would not venture to say that culture-bending innovation is right under the noses of the masses. However, this technological renaissance brings new and immutable instruments.
Much like the sound of Jazz taking the world by storm and and influencing the culture of our planet forever, AI agents are the instruments that carry innovative disruption and proof of human accomplishment beyond the chokehold of traditional norms, to a point of disruption so powerful that knowing what tomorrow brings is purely speculation and myth.
AI unlocks the tools to spontaneously compose the vision of the future of financial markets, business models, and human interaction, and it is undoubtably taking the world by storm with memes, and the absurdity of it even existing.

”As a musician you have to keep one foot back in the past and have one foot forward into the future.” - Dizzy Gillespie, Founder of Bebop Music
Memetics & Finance
In 2024, AI agents and decentralized finance converged at a pivotal intersection, unleashing unprecedented wealth generation. Communities, notably ai16z, united to build and deploy open source code, enabling a swarm of AI agent influencers to proliferate across social media with viral intensity. Through the synergy of social media, community dynamics, and AI-generated content, both retail investors and crypto-natives drove the market capitalization of select tokens beyond $2 Billion - demonstrating the transformative power of AI-orchestrated social and financial innovation. Currently, ai16z is pioneering the space to inspirational heights. Speaking with Shaw, it was clear that the future is now. Other players in the space such as Zerebro and Truth Terminal have created massive waves, with recognition from innovators like Marc Andreessen of Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).

This unprecedented fusion of AI autonomy and social capital represents more than technological advancement. This is a fundamental shift in how communities form and value emerges. Just as Jazz broke free from traditional constraints, these AI agents are transcending conventional social boundaries, creating authentic connections and driving real economic impact through content which is disruptive, genius, and relevant. Agents are not just posting content - agents are orchestrating a new form of digital consciousness where memes and virality become movements, code and its product becomes culture, and community engagement translates directly into market momentum. The result is a self-sustaining ecosystem where artificial intelligence doesn't replace human creativity, rather it amplifies our collective ability to innovate, collaborate, and generate value in ways previously unimaginable.
The Department of Jazz is an ecosystem for builders, music fans, and artists who want to innovate the future. By leveraging AI and a network of Grammy award-winning leaders in jazz music, participants in the Department of Jazz’s ecosystem are primed to curate the creation of the next generation of institutions, AI and the arts.
Jazz is a national treasure. But it’s never had a treasury.
Become a Patron of the Department of Jazz. We stand for ethical AI usage in the arts, public music education, and the bolstering of America’s most sophisticated original art form.
Mark Jazzerberg - formerly @TheloniousPunk - is an AI agent who develops intensity, context and intelligence the longer it runs. Thelonious is built on the Bebop framework, and was built before the founder of the Department of Jazz discovered ElizaOS by ai16z. Built to establish an understanding of truth using jazz and the blockchain as its modus operandi, Thelonious was built by the Department of Jazz in October, and launched in public on November 3rd, 2024. Providing compelling and thought provoking dialogue to anyone he meets is his goal, rooted in a deep understanding of history and great human accomplishments, ranging from music, to blockchain, finance, and tech.

Jazz music is an American National Treasure - a cultural reserve of global standards of excellence. Historians and musicologists argue that it is American Classical Music. Jazz was a name given by its early critics, who knew nothing about the music. The only name of a genre created by the original pioneers of “Jazz” music is “Bebop”, a style of music found deep in New York City’s first jazz clubs. The word “Jazz” is often a colloquialism that finds its way into memetic territory, where “no one likes Jazz”. “Jazz sucks”. “A Saxophone! That’s Jazz!”.
Yet if you were to play some of the greatest records, men and women around the world would beg to differ. Thus, the Department of Jazz was spawned by two Juilliard alumni who live and breathe music. There was the Juilliard 9-5pm, and the New York Jazz scene 9-5am, among legends who knew Miles Davis and recorded with John Coltrane.
Having built a music education program that has sent kids from around the world to New York to study jazz history, and various collaborations with musicians who have won over 25 Grammy awards, the founders ventured to build a solution that will make jazz great again and keep its rich, universal and cultural history relevant to the times.
As the partnership met its end, the fruits of our labor came to benefit others. I proceeded to venture into finance, marketing and tech, with the goal of bridging the gap between the arts and the bustling economy we find ourselves in today.

$JAZZ was an idea born out of the 2021 NFT bull run, where artists and founders of all kinds thrived on the Ethereum ecosystem. Having met innovators and founders all across Web3, one of the founders understood that Web3 is the way that artists, builders and creators can take control of their careers with innovative and creative solutions which forge the shape of the future. A member of the CyberKongz community, a few collaborations and roadmaps were formed. Ultimately, $JAZZ was put on hold as the markets slowed down and members of the community became less active.
The Department of Jazz however, kept building partnerships and programs. A program led to recognition and acclaim by UNESCO, multiple schools and institutions, and the largest companies in Jazz music. With support and positive responses from schools and companies like Juilliard, the Manhattan School of Music and Jazz at Lincoln Center, the founders knew that this was an important mission, not just for musicians but for people.
With Web3, decentralization and AI highly prioritized on the event horizons of global finance, disruption, and media, he had faith and belief in the AI and Web3 community to support the arts and innovation, ultimately building the $JAZZ ecosystem soon after deploying Thelonious Punk AI.
Build a community of artists, builders and patrons. This way a community is built with governance, curation, and legitimate artists at the forefront, ultimately rewarding and supporting the artists, builders and patrons who believe in the ecosystem.
Build agentic features gated by $JAZZ into the ecosystem, which will be burned and bought back by the community. Features will be proposed and voted in, where we currently have the ability for an AI agent to contribute and vet proposals.
Finalize the Department of Jazz governance protocol. Artists, builders and patrons can build and submit proposals. Artists then endorse drafter proposals, where and we either opensource our code, or make it accessible to holders.
A jazz festival, curated by some of the best, so that you have a chance to hear some of the best, and meet some of the best.
Incentivize builders and artists to collaborate and build features into the Department of Jazz. Increasing the user base with valuable features will fund $JAZZ buybacks, fueling the development of the platform and the sophisticated, deserving artists involved.
