Hello! A categorical rewiring is underway, in infant bloom. Early blows are being traded in an undeclared digital land war, the map’s markings are clearly obfuscated. The borders bleed into each other; though one begins anew, not where the other ends.
Social graphs, politically graft.
Asylum. Last week nearly every major social platform announced they’re going to allow “their” users to directly monetize from “their” audience, and many teased the notion of NFTs. The iron maiden groans as it closes on its prey — us — desperate to keep our broken behaviors trapped inside its digital ad-ridden cocoon. Their centralized prison block, unchained.
We are the batteries powering their machine.
Possessives. What we think is ours is actually theirs. Direct monetization and distribution bestows a sense of power, and it’s now being packaged to us as a gift. This long-overdue gesture is a distraction from self-sovereign identity. It’s disingenuous.
Ownership. The market dictates outcomes of product, now disengaged sizable audience. It is mostly unportable, and transferability will become infinitely more burdensome. It’s a (linear) numbers game no matter which way you skin it. Impressions over information; quantity over quality. The loss leaders to be made up for in volume.
Value conversion. The creator* economy is real. It is expanding and fleeing to the mountains of web3. It is freeing. The emerging (circular) mechanics of verifiable digital ownership (and organization) are being developed openly in real-time, right now. *This word is being throw around far too carelessly by VCs, and not everything is worthy of a paywall, obvs.
Stockholm syndrome. It might not immediately supplant the habits that we’ve been groomed to adopt over the last 20 years. It’ll exist as its own supplementary system for now, but might become the primary. The allure of the anti-establishment.
(R)evolution is afoot. A fight for transparency and equitability. Market makers, not manipulators. A new world order.
That’s all for now. Thanks for reading. Old habits die hard. See ya next week.
