Imagine an NFT project where the intellectual property (IP) is not owned by holders.
Doesn’t this beat the point of NFTs?
It does. But one of the biggest NFT projects is doing this and it’s working.
Nouns is an NFT project of pixelated figures wearing glasses. What’s cool is they are a CC0 project or a Creative Commons project. This means the art is open source, anyone can do what they want with their art.
Think about it like a record label giving away all their music for free. No copyrights, no royalties, nothing.
Why would anyone do this?
Because of the power of NFTs anything created using the project is directly beneficial to the project. Everything created through the CC0 is directly beneficial to Nouns, the Nouns DAO, and the Nouns NFT holders.
Here’s what the project has done so far:
• Dropped apparel • Launched sunglasses • Produced a documentary • Sponsored an esports team
And all of this is through open-sourcing their IP.
No wonder the project has sold $100 million in NFTs.
Is this the way most NFT projects will turn out in the future? And should they?
