World Children's Day

Children's Day is a day celebrated with children. It is celebrated at different times in different countries of the world. Children's Day was first celebrated on April 23, 1920 in Turkey. World Children's Day is celebrated on November 20, and International Children's Day is celebrated on June 1. However, different countries have their own specific days to celebrate Children's Day.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's birthday is celebrated as 'National Children's Day' as a children's festival in Bangladesh. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's birthday was celebrated on March 17 as the first National Children's Day in 1994.

National Children's Organization 'Bangabandhu Shishu Kishore Mela' celebrates Bangabandhu's birthday as ``National Children's Day'' for the first time.

Academician Dr. Nilima Ibrahim proposed to observe the day as ``National Children's Day'' at the National Conference of the Bangabandhu Shishu Kishore Mela on December 25, 1993. The then leader of the opposition party, Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina, was present as the chief guest at that conference. He celebrated National Children's Day on Bangabandhu's birthday. Neelima supported Ibrahim's proposal.

Since 1994, Bangabandhu Shishu Kishore Mela has been unofficially observed on 17th March as ``National Children's Day'' for the first time. Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Rehana inaugurated the first National Children's Day.

In 1996, it was decided to officially celebrate the birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as ``National Children's Day''. Since 1997, the day has been officially observed as National Children's Day.

World Children's Day is celebrated in Bangladesh on the first Monday of October
