Disclosure: I own shares in Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Not investment advice. One has to win this race. Right?
Surprise, surprise, you're back! Looking for that alpha, huh?
So are (Amazon's) Anthropic, (Google’s) DeepMind, and (Microsoft's) OpenAI. (Microsoft and Amazon are just “investors”) They all want that data so their version of AI can be faster, stronger, and maybe even reach the all-coveted "General Artificial Intelligence" crown. (Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that can perform as well or better than humans on a wide range of cognitive tasks. This is in contrast to narrow AI, which is designed for specific tasks. AGI is considered one of various definitions of strong AI. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_general_intelligence)
Well, as with all good kings or queens, these companies need their people to make them the "real money." This goes for that juicy data, processing ability, and actual money. Because these systems are so data-hungry and quickly running out, lawyers are bending and breaking the rules to get it. (Researchers warn we could run out of data to train AI by 2026. What then?, Rita Matulionyte, https://theconversation.com/researchers-warn-we-could-run-out-of-data-to-train-ai-by-2026-what-then-216741 and For Data-Guzzling AI Companies, the Internet Is Too Small, Deepa Seetharaman, April 1, 2024, https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-training-data-synthetic-openai-anthropic-9230f8d8) So I bet you'll see a lot more deals done with private companies having large amounts of non-public data. And more blockchain-based publishers looking for ways to make sure they are the new gold standard for storage and licensing intellectual property, but more on that some other time.
The point is, everyone wants this juicy private data so their AI can kick ass, so here's the (REDACTED) part of the equation to make us all better off:
It's Universal Basic Income! Or more properly, universal basic income through Profit Participation Units (PPUs). PPUs are like shares with no voting rights. They allow for profit distribution from the company or nonprofit to the holder of the PPUs. PPUs have a famous history at OpenAI. Hell, even Elon Musk has found beef over it (OpenAI calls Elon Musk’s lawsuit ‘frivolous’ and ‘incoherent’ in legal filing, Nick Robins-Early, March 12, 2024, https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/mar/12/elon-musk-openai-lawsuit). (I will leave it up to people smarter than me to figure out governance for all this, but this is just to get the ball rolling.)
So, this is what we do: you want our data? Have it. Crack open those stores of wealth and incredibly accomplished works but make everyone whose data you use an owner in the solution and the solutions that the AI creates off of that data. Some very smart math folks can figure out the value of quantity vs. quality while making sure it's a fair balance. The data security/compliance folks will make sure it's protected and encrypted in a ladder of sensitivity from the least to the most, with the most being a later iteration "ten years down the line" after it can be trusted to maintain confidence. (No one should know each other's dumb search history or where a man's portal gun has been)
Then, with this solution, it doesn't matter who wins, because we all win. There’s going to be a need for more than one AGI. And, I think that's what we have to do to fix healthcare around the globe, solve the "silly human problems" we have, and finally get to focus on making sure if anything terrible does happen to this planet, well, some of those silly human problems get to go through the cycle again. Maybe they will learn from our mistakes, with the help of artificial general intelligence by their side.
Now, before I let you brag to all your friends that you know how you solved for the AI revolution and workforce rebellion, I want to point out one big "but." The "butt-ers" of the bunch will say, "What about those who don't have any data on the internet?!" And to them, I would say that's cute. You have data on the internet. It might not be in the places you find it most, like Google and Facebook, but it's out there thanks to the millions of data breaches that happen each year. (Looking at you most recently, Dropbox. You useless bastards. Your job is to literally store and protect data! How do you screw that up?! Hackers Compromised Dropbox eSignature Service, Eduard Kovacs, May 2, 2024, https://www.securityweek.com/dropbox-data-breach-impacts-customer-information/) Even if you do not use the internet, it doesn't mean your data isn't on here. Medical records including giving blood, banking records, court records, “club points” and much more. These billion-dollar companies are built on finding data about everyone, whether they are online and especially if you're not, because that data may be deemed more valuable in certain circles.
Lastly, to the few folks who believe "these companies shouldn't have my data, etc.," I agree. However, here's the thing: they are going to get it one way or another. Facebook executed a man-in-the-middle attack to gain access to Snapchat data, and we're talking about GENERAL ARTIFICIAL FUCKING INTELLIGENCE here. (Facebook snooped on users’ Snapchat traffic in secret project, documents reveal, Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai, March 26, 2024, https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/26/facebook-secret-project-snooped-snapchat-user-traffic/)
It's the next skill tree unlock for all of humanity. They will acquire your data with or without your consent.
